Recoi l and appropriate safety notice
Recoi l is a sudden reaction of the power tool to jamming or obstruction of the revolving working tool
such as abrasive wheel, backing pad, wire brush etc. Jamming or obstruction leads to a sudden halt
of the revolving working tool. Uncontrolled power tool will jerk in the direction opposite of the direc-
tion of working tool rotation. If, e.g. abrasive wheel jams or binds in the processed object, the edge
of the abrasive wheel submerged in the material can block and result in its falling out or recoil.
The movement of the abrasive wheel (in the direction towards the person operating it or from them)
depends in such case on the movement of abrasive wheel in the place of its blockage. Apart from that,
the abrasive wheels can also break. The recoil is a consequence of an improper or wrong use of a power
tool. It can be avoided by following the safety measures listed below.
a. The p ower tool should be held fi rmly, while body and arms should be in a position which
would alleviate the recoil. If the standard set contains an auxiliary handle, it should be
used to gain full control over the recoil force or recoil during start-up.
The person using
the tool can control the jolts and the recoil by adhering to proper safety measures.
b. Alway s keep your hands away from the revolving working tools. The working tool as
a result of recoil can injure the hand.
c. Make sure to keep away from the reach zone in which the power tool moves during
recoil. As a result of recoil, the power tool moves in the direction opposite to the movement
of abrasive wheel in the place of blocking.
d. Be ex tremely careful while working with corners, sharp edges etc. Make sure to pre-
vent the working tools from bouncing off or from blocking. Rotating working tool is more
prone to jamming while working with corners, sharp edges or when it bounces off . It can lead
to loss of control or recoil.
e. Preve nt blocking of the working tool in the material by limiting the clamp and exces-
sive velocity of working with material. Overloading of the cutting wheel increases the risk
of recoil.
f. In ca se of jamming or a break in work caused by other reasons, make sure to switch off
the electric tool and hold it steadily, so that the wheel stops entirely.
If the wheel is still
rotating, do not try to remove it from the processed material as it can lead to recoil. Examine
and remove the cause of jamming.
g. Do not turn on the electric device if it is still located in the processed material. Wait until
the cutting wheel gains the full rotational speed and carefully continue the cutting af-
terwards.
Otherwise the wheel can clip, bounce off the processed material or cause recoil (if
during the switching on the device, the tool is submerged in the processed material).
h. Panel s and large objects should be properly supported in order to avoid jamming
of the working tool and recoil. Big processed objects can bend under their own load.
The processed material has to be supported on each side of the wheel, both near the cutting
wheel and its edge.
i. Be extremely cautious while cutting wall chases and “pockets” in walls or in out-of-sight
areas.
The cutting wheel submerging in the wall can come across electric, gas, hydraulic sys-
tems or other objects and can cause recoil.
