Operation
Capacity regulation and fixed
volume ratio Vi
The design without a moveable slide valve under the ro
-
tors provides a very robust design. However, select the
fixed volume ratio as close to the ideal value to provide
reliable and efficient operation. The simple plug valve is
available to allow start-up and safe operation at low dif-
ferential and other abnormal operations.
Capacity regulation is accomplished through
variable com-
pressor speed. The unloading plug valve can be used, but
its effect is limited.
Compressor oil cooling systems
The HPS unit can be equipped with one of several systems
for controlling the
compressor oil temperature. They are
single port
liquid injection and thermo syphon or water-
cooled oil coolers. Each system is autom ati cally controlled,
independent of compressor loading or unloading.
Oil cooling systems maintain oil temperature within the
following ranges for R-744:
Liquid injection oil cooling:
130°F to 160°F
(54.4°C to 71.1°C)
External oil cooling:
120°F to 160°F
(48.9°C to 71.1°C)
Note:
External oil cooling is thermosyphon oil cooling
(TSOC), water-cooled oil cooling (WCOC), or glycol
cooled.
Single-port liquid injection
The
single-port liquid injection system is desig ned to per
-
mit liquid refrigerant injection into one port on the com
-
pressor at any given moment and operates as outlined.
The liquid injection solenoid valve is energized by the
control panel when the temperature sensor, which is in-
stalled in the compressor discharge, exceeds the
setpoint.

Suction check valve bypass
The HPS unit is equipped with a suction bypass line
mounted adjacent to the compressor housing. Valve NV-3
must be open in most syste
ms at all times. Normally it is
cracked open to allow the oil separator to slowly bleed
down to approximately system suction pressure when the
unit is stopped. Having this valve cracked open allows
the compressor drive motor to start more easily, and the
discharge check valve to seat
more tightly. If the
com-
pressor backspins, start closing the valve until the back
-
spin stops. If the separator oil level foams excessively on
shutdown, close NV-3 slightly. If the separator takes more
than 20 min to 30 min to equalize to suction pressure after
shutdown, you can open NV-3 slightly. See the following
