11.2 RF regulations in EU countries and the USA
The design and RF power of antennas are determined chiefly by the country-specific RF regulating
agencies. For all EU member countries uniform limits according to the R&TTE Directive and EN
300 330 apply. In North America this is regulated by FCC Part 15.
The most important limit for the antennas, the maximum permissible magnetic field strength at
13.56 MHz and a distance of 10 cm, is : 60dB
µ
A/m in EU countries and 42dB
µ
A/m in the USA.
When starting up the antenna, ensure that the permissible limits as defined by the national RF
regulations are not exceeded.
The regulations EN 300 330 and FCC Part 15 in the USA specify a maximum distance between
the carrier and side bands. Depending on the RF power these limits can be exceeded, or the
setting in the Reader (CFG-Block 5: RF-MOD, CFG-Block 8: Data coding) must be adjusted.
When starting up, the system integrator should ensure that the prescribed installation instructions
are followed, the necessary Reader settings are performed and the allowed limits of the national
RF regulations are not exceeded.
