Installing and connecting the hardware

After you have reviewed the hardware requirements and become familiar 
with the 6900/8900 platform, as described in 

Getting started with the 

6900/8900 platform

, on page 1-2, you can install the unit.

The 6900/8900 platform comes with two types of rack mounting kits: 
stationary front-mounting and sliding rail-mounting. An advantage of 
installing the sliding rail mounting kit is that you can then slide the unit in 
and out of the rack as needed. 

The tasks you need to perform to install the platform hardware differ, 
depending on which type of rack mount you decide to use, or which type of 
cabinet unit you are installing into (single two-post cabinet or four-post 
cabinet):

Front-mounting kit

If you want to install the 6900/8900 platform using a front-mounting kit, 
you need to install the front-mounting brackets directly onto the unit, 
install the unit into the rack, and then connect the peripheral hardware 
and the interfaces. For detailed information, see

Rail-mounting kit

If you want to install the 6900/8900 platform using a rail-mounting kit, 
you need to install the inner rails onto the unit, install the outer rails into 
the rack, install the unit into the outer rails, and then connect the 
peripheral hardware and the interfaces. For detailed information on 
installing a rail-mounting kit and installing the unit into the rack, see the 
manufacturer’s installation instructions included with the rail-mounting 
kit and

Once you have completed these tasks, you can then connect the cables and

Whether you are using front mount or rail mount, you should read the 
following general recommendations before proceeding with the installation 
of the 6900/8900 platform.
