GLOSSARY OF TERMS
A
ft:
In, near or toward the stern of a boat.
Aground:
A boat stuck on the bottom.
Amidships:
In or toward the part of a boat midway
between the bow and stern.
Anchor:
A specially shaped heavy metal device
designed to dig efficiently into the bottom under a
body of water and hold a boat in place.
Anchorage:
An area specifically designated by
governmental authorities in which boats may anchor.
Ashore:
On shore.
Astern:
Behind the boat, to move backwards.
Athwartship:
At right angles to the center line of
the boat.

arnacles:
Small, hard-shelled marine animals
which are found in salt water attached to pilings,
docks and bottoms of boats.
Beam:
The breadth of a boat usually measured at
its widest part.
Bearing:
The direction of an object from the boat,
either relative to the boat’s direction or to compass
degrees.
Berth:
A bunk or a bed on a boat.
Bilge:
The bottom of the boat below the flooring.
Bilge Pump:
A pump that removes water that
collects in the bilge.
Boarding:
Entering or climbing into a boat.
Boarding Ladder:
Set of steps temporarily fitted
over the side of a boat to assist persons coming
aboard.
Boat Hook:
Short shaft of wood or metal with a
hook fitting at one end shaped to aid in extending
one’s reach from the side of the boat.
Bow:
The front end of a boat’s hull
Bow Line:
A line that leads forward from the
bow of the boat.
Bow Rail:
Knee high rails of solid tubing to aid
in preventing people from falling overboard.
Bridge:
The area from which a boat is steered
and controlled.
Bridge Deck:
A deck forward and usually above
the cockpit deck.
Broach:
When the boat is sideways to the seas
and in danger of capsizing; a very dangerous situ-
ation that should be avoided.
Bulkhead:
Vertical partition or wall separating
compartments of a boat.

abin:
Enclosed superstructure above the main
deck level.
Capsize:
When a boat lays on its side or turns
over.
Chock:
A deck fitting, usually of metal, with
inward curving arms through which mooring or
anchor lines are passed so as to lead them in the
proper direction both on board and off the boat.
Cleat:
A deck fitting, usually of metal with pro-
jecting arms used for securing anchor and moor-
ing lines.
Closed Cooling System:
A separate supply of
fresh water that is used to cool the engine and
circulates only within the engine.
Coaming:
A vertical piece around the edges of
cockpit, hatches, etc. to stop water on deck from
running below.
Cockpit:
An open space, usually in the aft deck,
outside of the cabin.
Companionway:
Opening in the deck of a boat
to provide access below.
Compartment:
The interior of a boat divided off
by bulkheads.
Cradle:
A framework designed to support a boat
as she is hauled out or stored.
Cutlass Bearing:
A rubber bearing in the strut
that supports the propeller shaft.
