4.9 Troubleshooting
The table below shows possible issues that operators may encounter when handling and operating ETUF
membranes, their causes and suggested methods of resolving those issues.
No.
Issue
Possible Cause
Remedy
1
Deterioration of filtrate
quality.
Loss of fiber integrity.
Observe filtrate turbidity and SDI trend.
Conduct PDT and leak arrest if necessary.
Trapped air in metering
equipment.
Air trapped within metering equipment may
cause false reading. Find and release
trapped air.
2
High feed pressure.
Feed pump control
malfunction.
Check and adjust controls.
Faulty feed pressure
sensor/ transmitter.
Check and re-calibrate feed pressure sensor/
transmitter. Replace if necessary.
3
Low feed pressure.
Feed pump malfunction.
Fix feed pump. Replace if necessary.
Faulty feed valve.
Check and replace the feed valve if
necessary.
Clogged pre-filter.
Clean pre-filter.
4
Water leakage from
collar.
O-ring out of position.
Adjust O-ring.
Damaged O-ring.
Replace O-ring.
End plate out of
position.
Adjust end plate.
Connections not
tightened properly.
Check if connections are tightened. If not,
tighten them. White tape may be used to
wrap around the screw threads to improve
contact.
5
High TMP/ TMP growth
rate.
Substantial fouling of
membrane.
Conduct CIP with suitable chemicals and
procedure.
Excessive design flux
rate.
Reduce flux rate and install more modules if
necessary.
Deterioration of feed
quality (resulting in
substantial fouling).
Check feed quality and pre-treatment
equipment and adjust accordingly. After
that, conduct CIP to clean the membrane.
6
Low filtrate flow rate.
Substantial fouling of
membrane.
Conduct CIP with suitable chemicals and
procedure.
