Symmectrical and asymmetrical two pole biphasic
current
The symmectrical and asymmetrical two pole biphasic
pulsed current (TENS) is used with the aim to reduce
pain by stimulating the thick afferent nerve fibres.
The phase duration is adjustable between 20 µs and
400 µs. A short phase duration allows selective stimula-
tion of the thick fibres. A burst frequency can be set for
treatment of deeper lying painful regions (myofascial
pain). Here too, a frequency modulation program can
be set to avoid accommodation.
Intermittent alternating current (Russian Stimulation)
Russian Stimulation is a medium frequency alternating
current with a carrier wave frequency of 2500 Hz. This
current is intermittent by a burst frequency (mostly 50
Hz) to decrease the total patient current, while the result
remains the same. A ratio with a certain current/pause
relation is used to adjust the current to the reactions of
the patient. Russian Stimulation is mostly used in the
recovery phase and/or with trained persons.
Diadynamic currents
Diadynamic currents are particularly suitable for treat-
ing pain in small joints (e.g. finger joints and wrist joint).
Segmental application of diadynamic currents gives
outstanding results in reflex dystrophy (Südeck’s dis-
ease) and in superficial hyperalgesia.
There is a choice between MF, DF, LP, CP, and CPid.
2-5 Current
This current type has a fixed phase duration and phase
interval (2 and 5 ms respectively). The 2-5 current pro-
vides remarkably effective pain suppression, which oc-
curs very rapidly and can last for several hours (Erst
Effect).
Pulsed current
For muscle stimulation with pulsed current a choice can
be made between rectangular and triangular pulsed
current. The phase duration is adjustable between 0.02
ms and 1000 ms (triagular from 0.1 ms). The phase in-
terval is adjustable between 5 ms and 5000 ms. The
phase interval must be at least twice the value of the
phase duration. If desired, a muscle stimulation program
can be selected.
In order to check the sensitivity of the neuromuscular
system to electric stimulation, it is possible to make S/d
curves. Optionally a special remote control can be ob-
tained which facilitates making an S/d curve.
Intermittent direct current
As this medium frequency intermittent direct current is
experienced as milder than the usual galvanic direct
current, this type of current is especially suited for
iontophoresis: introducing medication through the skin.
Direct current has a pain mildering effect, while also the
circulation is stimulated.
1
Type sticker
Provides information on the unit, such as type and serial
number, as well as connection data such as mains volt-
age, frequency, fuses, current consumption and safety
class.
2
Potential equalization connection
For use in areas where local regulations require con-
nection of a potential equalization cable. An earth
(ground) cable and plug can be supplied.
3
Mains switch, mains input and fuses
The switch is used to switch the Endomed 581

on and
off. The mains cable is connected to the mains input,
which is provided with two fuses.
4
Carrying handle (retractable)
5
Phase duration
Shows the phase duration (in ms) for pulsed currents
(rectangular and triangular).
6
Burstfrequency
Indicates the burst frequency with pulsed currents and
intermittent alternating currents (Russian Stimulation).
7
Phase interval / carrier wave frequency
Indicates the set phase interval with pulsed currents and
the carrier wave frequency with Russian Stimulation.
8
Ratio
Indicates the relation between the time of the puls train
and the pause between two puls trains with Russian
Stimulation.
9
Stimulation frequency
Indicates the stimulation frequency with pulsed currents
and interference (AMF).
10 Diadynamic currents
Indicates which type has been selected with diadynamic
currents.
11 Frequency modulation
Indicates the frequency change set to avoid accom-
modiation with pulsed currents and interference.
12 Muscle stimulation programs
With all current forms, four ramp programs can be cho-
sen for muscle stimulation. The display shows the hold
time and the pauses in seconds. The ramp-up and ramp-
down time have a fixed value of 2 seconds.
13 Frequency modulation program
Indicates which program has been chosen with fre-
quency modulation. The indication is in seconds. A long
modulation is mild, a short modulation is more agressive.
14 Clock
This display shows the treatment time in minutes and
seconds. The timer begins to count down as soon as the
treatment starts.
15 Program number
Shows the number under which a particular set of equip-
ment parameters has been stored.
