Securing electrodes is very important when applying NMES as the skin moves when the muscle
contracts. Unsecured electrodes can lead to electrical burns and very uncomfortable
stimulation.
•
Use the stimulator in the Constant Current (CC) mode. This will maintain the set current
amplitude, even when the impedance of the sponge pads increases during treatment caused by
water evaporation.
•
Keep the sponge pads well moistened (close to dripping when lightly squeezed) during
treatment. Remoisten when treatment exceeds 10 minutes.
•
After use clean the
sponge pads as described under “
cleaning and disinfection
”.
Self-adhesive electrodes
Repeated use of pre-gelled electrodes leads to rapid loss of conductivity and deteriorating
adhesiveness.
The loss of adhesion and drying of the gel will cause the edges to begin lifting which can
dramatically increase current density; cause uneven distribution of current across the
electrode surface, increasing the risk of burn; and potentially result in electrode movement.
Changes that occur in self-adhesive electrodes over time result in an unsafe situation where
skin irritation and patient discomfort can occur.
Self-adhesive electrodes should never be shared between patients.
Self-adhesive electrodes have higher series impedance than flexible rubber electrodes. This can
cause the stimulator to terminate treatment at higher current amplitudes. When this occurs, it is
recommended to continue the treatment with flexible rubber electrodes, combined with properly
moistened sponge pads.
Percutaneous electrodes
PENS / Electroacupuncture is a minimaly invasive treatment technique that requires special skills to
insert disposble acupuncture needles in/through the skin (percutaneous) at specific points of the
body. Therefore this procedure should only be performed by medical professionalists that have a
profound knowledge and experience in the field of Traditional Chinese Medicine and/or
(Electro)Acupuncture.
Enraf-Nonius does not supply percutaneous electrodes (such as disposable acupuncture needles and
needle-like electrode pads). The user must ensure that sterile percutaneous electrodes for single use
are being used when applying PENS/Electroacupuncture and that such electrodes meet the standards
for medical devices and the requirements for electrode needles.
