Glossary

Synchronize

To synchronize a tape drive and volume is to ensure that all data 
written to the tape drive has been recorded to the recording medium 
of that volume.

This verb is normally used without one or more of the objects, e.g. 
“the data is synchronized” or “the data was synchronized to tape”.

T

Terabyte

A unit of measure for digital data equal to approximately 1,000 
gigabytes, or 1,099,511,627,776 bytes.

V

Virtual tape cartridge

(VTC)

An emulation of a real, physical tape cartridge, including a type, any 
nonvolatile memory associated with the case housing, and that 
recording medium. Also referred to as a virtual tape volume or a 
virtual volume.

Z

Zoning

A method of arranging Fibre Channel devices into logical groups 
over the physical configuration of the fabric. SAN zoning may be 
utilized to implement compartmentalization of data for security 
purposes. Each device in a SAN may be placed into multiple zones.
