43 Protections
4.3.1 Software protections
4.3.1.1 IPF (Intelligent Proportional Foldback)
The IPF is an intelligent system which reduces the equipment’s output power in case of
excess of load mismatch, thus preventing the equipment turning off
Foldback acts if the load mismatch increases slowly If the event is fast (examples: a ligh-
ting into a connector, the detachment of a transmission line, a short circuit and so on),
the protection acts quickly
The activation of this feature is shown on display and via telemetry as alarm no “026”
4.3.1.2 IPC (Intelligent Control Power)
When the equipment is working properly, the IPC keeps the output power constant within
+/-1% of the target set, irrespective of mains voltage, temperature and load variations
This greatly contributes to making the equipment insensitive to its working conditions
The IPC also allows to optimize the RF section efficiency by making work the MOSFETs
constantly at maximum efficiency, thus minimizing overall electrical consumption
4.3.1.3 Safety Management (“Lifextender”option)
®
The Safety Management consists of algorithms to perform real-time analysis of the
transmitter’s operating status It works in order to maintain the output power set, accor-
ding to kind and severity of any anomalies (internal or environmental) which may occur
The Safety Management may perform an output power reduction proportional to the
severity of the anomaly that occurs, in order to avoid the progression of the fault
The algorithms act at different levels and in various sections of the equipment: Thermal
Management on the RF unit; Current Management, Fault Management and Thermal Ma-
nagement on the power supply units; Fault management on the RF unit; Cooling Mana-
gement on the fans
Thermal Management on the RF unit (Lifextender) ®
When the temperature measured near to MOSFETs exceeds 72 °C, a first level of derating
works moderately trying to reduce the temperature via an output power decrease This
power reduction is the minimum allowed in order to reach a thermal balance at a tempe-
rature lower than 72 °C This decreasing never exceeds 48% in first derating level Infact,
the output power always remains above 52% of that set by the user so that the “-3 dB”
warning and relative alarms don’t occur This first derating level is effective in virtually all
cases The activation of this feature is shown on the display and via telemetry as alarm
no “010”
If the first derating level will be insufficient (extremely rare cases), a second derating le-
vel starts, further reducing the power, thus obtaining a thermal balance status compatible
with the safe operation of the equipment, even if the output power is below - 3dB (with
subsequent alarm no “005”)
If also the second derating level will be ineffective (in case of external conditions which
are not compatible with the safe operation of the equipment), the transmitter is switched
off
In this case, when the temperature decreases, the power increases proportionally If it
decreases by 10°C (ie it reaches 62 °C) the derating algorithm stops
and the full power is restored After five failed attempts, the logic control unit stops the
equipment (alarm no “003”)
