Special Safety Advice for Grinding
and Abrasive Cutting
a)
Without exception, always use grinding tools
specifi cally approved for use with the VARILEX
®
Akku angle grinder and in conjunction with the
guard provided for use with these tools. Grinding
tools not designed for use with this grinder can
not be adequately shielded and are unsafe.
b)
Off-set grinding discs must be attached such
that their grinding surface does not protrude
beyond the edge of the guard. A poorly attached
grinding disc that protrudes beyond the edge of
the guard, cannot be suffi ciently screened off.
c)
The guard must be securely attached to the
VARILEX
®
Akku angle grinder and adjusted
for safety such that only the smallest possible
edge of the grinding tool is clearly visible to the
operator. The guard helps to protect the operator
from fragments, accidental contact with the
grinding tool as well as from sparks, which could
ignite clothing.
d)
Grinding tools must only ever be used for the
recommended tasks. For example: never use the
edge of an abrasive cutting disc for grinding.
Abrasive cutting discs are designed for cutting
into materials with the edge of the disc. Lateral
forces working on this grinding tool can break it.
e)
Always use the undamaged clamping fl ange,
in the correct shape and size for your selected
grinding disc. Suitable fl anges support the
grinding surface, thus minimising the risk of a
grinding disc fracture. Flanges for abrasive cut-
ting discs can differ from the fl anges designed
for other grinding discs.
f)
Never use worn grinding discs from larger
angle grinders. Grinding discs from larger angle
grinders are not designed for the higher rotation
speeds of smaller angle grinders and could
break.
Additional Safety Advice for Abrasive Cutting
a)
Avoid blocking the cutting disc and applying
too much contact pressure. Do not cut too
deeply. Overloading the abrasive cutting disc
will increase the stress forces acting on it and
its susceptibility to snagging or blocking and,
therefore, the likelihood of a kickback or grinding
disc breakage.
b)
Avoid the area immediately behind the rota-
ting cutting disc. If you push the abrasive cutting
disc through the workpiece away from you then
VARILEX
®
Akku angle grinder with the spinning
disc could be propelled towards you in the event
of a kickback.
c)
If the abrasive cutting disc gets stuck or if
you should interrupt a cutting task, then switch
the grinder off and hold it tight it until the disc
has come to a complete stop. Never attempt
to remove a still rotating disc from the cut, as
that could cause a kickback. Find out why it has
jammed and rectify the problem.
d)
Do not switch the grinder back on while the
disc is still in the workpiece. Allow the abrasive
cutting disc to reach its maximum rotation
speed before continuing to cut with it.
Do so can cause the disc to snag, fl y out of the
workpiece or can result in a kickback.
e)
Ensure that you support and stabilise metal
plates or large workpieces to reduce the risk of a
kickback due to snagged abrasive cutting discs.
Large workpieces can bend under their own
weight. The workpiece must be shored up on
both sides of the disc both close to the abrasive
cutting disc and at the edges.
f)
Be particularly careful when making “pocket
cuts” in existing walls or other screened off
areas. The disc could cut into gas or water pipes
or sever electrical power cables or other fi xtures
causing a kickback, which could damage them.
