5300 MOBILE FIRMWARE VERSIONS
SECTION 9 5300 MOBILE FIRMWARE VERSIONS
9.1 GENERAL
There currently is, or soon will be, four different
firmware versions in use in 53xx radios. Firmware is
the Application code which controls the operation of
the radio. It is not the standard personality information
programmed by the PCConfigure programming soft-
ware.
Later firmware versions may provide some oper-
ating features that are not available in earlier versions.
For example, radios with Version 4.x radios may have
features that are not available with Version 2.x or 3.x
radios. These differences are noted in this manual in
the feature description in most cases. More informa-
tion on the various versions follows.
9.2 53XX RADIO FIRMWARE VERSIONS
9.2.1 VERSION 1 (ARM) RADIOS
Earlier version 53xx radios have an ARM
processor based logic board, Part No. 035-1800-4xx,
which uses Version 1.x firmware. This board has a
jack for plugging in Motorola UCM encryption
modules that provide DES/DES-XL/DES-OFB and
AES encryption. This is a different module than that
used in SEM and UCM versions which follow. Two
Application code files are used to program these
radios. One programs DSP parameters and the other
programs ARM processor parameters. This radio
version has been replaced by the following versions.
9.2.2 VERSION 2 AND 3 (PPC) RADIOS
Beginning in November 2003, a revised logic
board began shipping. This board utilizes a PPC
(Power PC
®
) control logic design similar to that used
in the 51xx portable. This board is available in the
following configurations. All versions are FIPS
approved. A single Application code file is used to
program these radios similar to the 51xx portable.
SEM Version -
This version uses Version 2.x firm-
ware and has the EFJohnson SEM (Security
Encryption Module) soldered to the board. It is
used whenever DES, DES-OFB, or AES encryp-
tion is required. It does not provide DES-XL
encryption.
UCM Version -
This version uses Version 3.x
firmware and includes a plug-in Motorola UCM
encryption module. It is used whenever DES-XL
Motorola proprietary encryption is required. It also
provides DES, DES-OFB, or AES encryption.
If encryption is not required, either the earlier
logic board (see following) or the UCM version
without the UCM module is used.
9.2.3 VERSION 4 (PPC) RADIOS
A new version of the preceding SEM logic board
will begin shipping in early 2005 that is redesigned to
interface with a new RF board being used in these
radios. The part number of this logic board is
023-5500-6xx, and it uses Version 4.x firmware. A
UCM version of this board is not currently planned.
9.3 DETERMINING RADIO VERSION
The radio/logic board version can be determined
by noting the second version number that is briefly
displayed when radio power is turned on. The first
number indicates the control unit code version.
9.4 PROGRAMMING SOFTWARE REQUIRED
Version 2.x and 3.x radios require PCConfigure
programming software, Version 1.21.2.5 or later.
Version 4.x radios require Version 1.25 or later. This
software can also be used to program Version 1.x
radios. The “5300” Radio Series is selected for both
boards. The software automatically detects which
board is used when parameters are written to the radio.
