Preparing to Install Your Operating System
AlphaServer 1000 Rackmount Owner's Guide 3-11
Before you install clients, add the following line to the client
/etc/exports
file for
each RIS area that your ULTRIX server is serving to DEC OSF/1 clients. The
/etc/exports
file can have either of the following formats.
•
If your server
var
area is separate from the
usr
area, there will be a symbolic link to
it at
/usr/var.
In this case, add a line similar to the following to the
/etc/exports
file:
/var/adm/ris/ris2.zips/kit -r=0 -o
In the previous example,
ris2.zips
is the product area where the RIS DEC OSF/1
Version T3.0B-2 is installed.
•
If your
var
area is part of your
usr
area, add a line similar to the following to the
/etc/exports
file:
/usr/var/adm/ris/ris2.zips/kit -r=0 -o
In the previous example,
ris2.zips
is the product area where the RIS DEC OSF/1
Version T3.0B-2 kit is installed.
Updating the Boot File for New Clients
After you have registered each client, you must add the appropriate node for each one.
Use the following
addnode
command for ULTRIX servers:
# addnode <hostname> -t /user/var/adm/ris/risn.mips
The ris0.mips location is the area into which the product was installed in "Setting Up a RIS
Area on an ULTRIX Server."
Before Starting the Boot Procedure
Before you start the boot procedure, perform the following steps:
1.
Clear the
boot_osflags
variable. This ensures that the correct kernel file boots
automatically.
>>>
set boot_osflags
2.
Set the
auto_action
variable to
halt
. This halts the system at the SRM console
prompt each time it is turned on, when it crashes, or when you press the Halt switch.
>>>
set auto_action halt
3.
Set the boot_file variable. This ensures that an alternate boot file is not set.
>>>
set boot_file
