Deploying FCoE (FIP Snooping) on Dell Force 10 MXL

Step by step explanation of CLI example for the Cisco Nexus 5000 Series using NPV (only covering the
differences from the single port configuration)
o
feature NPV–
enables the NPV feature which turns off zoning. The FC side of the Nexus 5000 series
switch effectively turns into just a FC gateway (just passing FC out to another switch). When this
feature is enabled the Cisco Nexus 5000 series switch will have to do a full reload because it is
completely changing the way it deals with the FC packet behavior. Be prepared for this reload
because it may impact a currently running network environment.
NOTE:
It will be obvious to the casual observer that when the Cisco Nexus ToR switch is changed
into NPV mode all zoning and services associated with FC termination are no longer active on the
switch. It will simply aggregate FC out to an FC switch that it will be connected to. With this change
in behavior some of the typical commands used when looking at the device logins will also change
and may not have the same capability. However the FC switch that the Cisco Nexus ToR switch is
connected to, in this case a Brocade FC8 switch, will have a view from the FC perspective of the
CNA’s connected at the other end in the blade servers (with a proper configuration in place). The
zoning and FC configurations will then happen on the FC switch.
With the Cisco Nexus 5K series in NPV mode verify that negotiations have happened properly between
the FCF and the CNA end devices, in this case the Cisco Nexus 55548 is the FCF. Type :

The FC interfaces will no longer show up and the “show flogi database” command is no longer
available.
Configuring the Dell Force10 MXL for FIP-snooping with Cisco Nexus 5000 series switch in NPV
mode.
The configuration will be the same as previously mentioned in the single or multiple port
configurations.
