charging the batteries and operating all of the electrical fixtures on
Lioness. Gauges for the generator are located on the generator box in
the engine room.
Inverter/Charger
Lioness is equipped with a Magnum 2000 watt pure sine inverter with 125
amp charging capability. An inverter converts 12 volt battery power into
115 volt AC power. Using Ohms Law (Watts=Voltage * Amps) we recognize
it takes more amperage at 12 volts than 115 volts. The same 1,000 watt
microwave that requires less than 9 amps at 115 volts requires almost 85
amps at 12 volts.
The battery bank on Lioness gives 250 amp hours at 12 volts. This should
provide the prudent person with more than enough reserve for at least a day
without charging.
When AC power is available from either generator or shore power the
inverter will “pass through” current directly from that source. Leave the
inverter switch on as it now acts as a charger to bring the battery banks up
to full charge.
Charging System
All wiring with the exception of the engine & generator starting and
thruster/windlass batteries, is wired to the house bus. The alternators of
both engines are wired to the house bank, therefore charging the house
bank. The voltage regulators and ACR’s (automatic charge relays) monitor
and regulate the battery charging circuits to the house battery bank, and
then to the start, thruster/windlass and generator batteries.
The inverter/charger is wired to the house bank to rapidly charge the house
bank. Once again, when the house bank exceeds 13.6 volts it is fully
charged.
It is important to monitor the condition of the
batteries using the volt meters on the electric panel
and the Magnum remote panel located next to the
Stabilizer control in the wheel house.
In the unlikely event where the start battery is
depleted and unable to start the engines, the battery
banks can be charged using the generator.
The Magnum Inverter Monitor will tell only House battery condition. The
Heart will tell both House battery and Start battery condition.
