3.0 USE
3.1 PLANNING: Plan your fall protection system before starting your work. Account for all factors that may a ff ect your safety
before, during, and after a fall. Consider all requirements and limitations de fi ned in Section 2.
Do not alter or intentionally misuse this equipment. Consult Capital Safety when using this
equipment in combination with components or subsystems other than those described in this
manual. Some subsystem and component combinations may interfere with the operation of this
equipment. Use caution when using this equipment around moving machinery, electrical hazards,
chemical hazards, sharp edges, or overhead materials that may fall onto the lifeline. Do not loop the
lifeline around structural members. Failure to heed this warning may result in equipment malfunction,
serious injury or death.
Consult your doctor if there is reason to doubt your fi tness to safely absorb the shock from a fall
arrest. Age and fi tness seriously a ff ect a worker’s ability to withstand falls. Pregnant women or
minors must not use DBI-SALA self retracting lifelines. Failure to heed this warning may result in
serious injury or death.
3.2 OPERATION: Prior to use, inspect the SRL as described in Section 4.0. Figure 8 shows system connections for typical
Talon Edge SRL applications. Attach the Talon Edge SRL on the back of a Full Body Harness per the instructions below.
(See Section 2.15) Ensure hooks are fully closed and locked. Once attached, the worker is free to move about within the
recommended working area. If a fall occurs the SRL will lock and arrest the fall. Upon rescue, remove the SRL from use.
When working with an SRL, always allow the lifeline to retract back into the device under control.
Do not tie or knot the lifeline. Avoid lifeline contact with sharp or abrasive surfaces. Inspect the
lifeline frequently for cuts, fraying, burns, or signs of chemical damage. Dirt, contaminants, and
water can lower dielectric properties of the lifeline. Use caution near power lines. Failure to heed
this warning may result in serious injury or death.
3.3 ANCHORAGE: Figure 8 illustrates typical Talon Edge lifeline anchorages and connections. Select an anchorage location
with minimal free fall and swing fall hazards (see Section 2). Select a rigid anchorage point capable of sustaining static
loads as de fi ned in Section 2.3. Where anchoring overhead is not feasible, Talon Edge SRLs may be secured to anchorage
points below the level of the user’s Dorsal D-Ring. The anchorage point must not be more than 1.52 m below the Dorsal
D-Ring. See Figures 2A, B, and C.
3.4 FALL CLEARANCE: When anchoring at levels overhead a minimum fall clearance of 4.0 m is required as shown in
Figure 6. Anchoring below head to foot level require a minimum of 6.0 m as shown in fi gure 7.
3.5 SETBACK AND WORKING DISTANCE: When working near an edge the SRL must be anchored at a minimum setback
distance of .03 m as shown in Figure 7. The maximum working distance along an edge is 1.5 m on either side of the
point where the anchorage location is perpendicular to the edge. These restrictions are shown in Figure 7 and must be
observed.
3.6 AFTER A FALL: Any equipment which has been subjected to the forces of arresting a fall or exhibits damage consistent
with the effect of fall arrest forces as described in Section 4, must be removed from service immediately, marked
“UNUSABLE”, and disposed of in the recommended manner (see “Section 4.6 - Disposal” ).
3.7 BODY SUPPORT: A full body harness must be worn when using Talon Edge SRLs. Connect the Talon Edge SRL to the
user’s harness back (dorsal) D-ring.
The Talon Edge SRL anchorage carabiner (A in Figure 1) must be connected to a suitable anchorage
as de fi ned in Section 2.3. The harness connector, located adjacent to the energy absorber (F in
Figure 1), must be connected to the Dorsal D-Ring on the user’s Full Body Harness. Failure to
connect the SRL in this manner may result in serious injury or death.
Figure 8 illustrates typical Talon Edge SRL anchorage connections: A - Anchorage B - Anchorage Connector C - Dorsal
D-Ring Connector. Connect the Dorsal D-Ring Connector to the Dorsal D-Ring on the user’s Full Body Harness.

Do not use a body belt for fall arrest applications.
3.8 MAKING CONNECTIONS: Figure 8 illustrates harness and anchorage connections for Talon Edge SRL Fall Arrest
Systems.
When using the snap hook to make a connection to the Dorsal D-Ring on the user’s Full Body Harness, ensure roll-out
cannot occur (see Sections 2.13, 2.14 and 2.15). The snap hook must not completely close over the Dorsal D-Ring. Do
not use non-locking snap hooks. The anchorage must meet the anchorage strength requirements stated in Section 2.3.
Follow the manufacturer’s instructions supplied with each system component.
3.9 HORIZONTAL SYSTEMS: In applications where the Talon Edge SRL is used in conjunction with a horizontal system (i.e.
Horizontal Lifeline, Horizontal I-Beams Trolley), the SRL carabiner and horizontal system components must be compatible.
Horizontal systems must be designed and installed under the supervision of a quali fi ed engineer. Consult the horizontal
system equipment manufacturer’s instructions for details.
