helper-address

The

helper-address

interface configuration command enables the software to forward User Datagram Protocol

(UDP) broadcasts, including BOOTP, received on an interface. To disable broadcast packets forwarding to specific
addresses, use the no form of this command.

Syntax

helper-address address

[

udp-port-list

]

no helper-address address

Parameters
•

address

— Destination broadcast or host address used when forwarding UDP broadcasts.

•

udp-port-list

— The broadcast packet destination UDP port number to forward. If not specified, packets for

the default services are forwarded to the helper address (Range: 1 - 65535).

Default Configuration

By default broadcast packets forwarding to specific addresses is disabled.

If enabling the function and no UDP port number is specified, by default the device forwards UDP broadcast
packets for the following six services:

•

IEN-116 Name Service (port 42)

•

DNS (port 53)

•

NetBIOS Name Server (port 137)

•

NetBIOS Datagram Server (port 138)

•

TACACS Server (port 49)

•

Time Service (port 37)

User Guidelines
•

Many helper addresses can be defined. The maximum number of address-port pairs is up to 128 for the

whole device.

•

The ip helper-address command forwards specific UDP broadcast from one interface to another.

•

BOOTP/DHCP (ports 67,68) packet forwarding is enabled with the DHCP relay commands.

•

The ip helper-address command specifies a UDP port number for which UDP broadcast packets with that

destination port number are forwarded.

Examples

The following example enables the software to forward UDP broadcasts on interface 1.100.100.0 to IP address
172.16.9.9 to ports 49 and 53.
