0.7.2.1 Server types
In the below we briefly outline the main server types.
Local
An S3 compatible server can easily be installed on any regular office PC.
In the simplest case, the server is run on the PC that is also used for analysing data. In this case, the
installation is as simple as running any other PC program.
Typical use cases:
• Devices connect to the server over a local network (LAN)
• One to a few devices
• A simple setup is preferred
Dedicated
Like with the local server setup, the S3 compatible server can be installed on a dedicated server.
Typical use cases:
• Devices connect to the server over an external network (WAN)
• It is preferred to store data on a company controlled server
• Users wish to avoid signing cloud service subscription plans
Cloud
The S3 can be run in the cloud with Amazon (AWS) or any other S3 compatible provider.
Typical use cases:
• It is preferred to outsource server hosting
• Users wish to combine data storage with other services (e.g. cloud computing)
0.7.2.2 Transfer throughput
The device-to-server throughput
is highly dependent on the device-to-server latency

The total quantity of data transferred within a unit of time
2
Time needed for a single packet transfer
3
This is particularly the case due to the limited resources of the device
