Operation, TWTA ODU Amplifier
Turn Power On
Turn ON the Power Switch on the amplifier. When filament time delay
is complete the amplifier is ready to transmit.
Turn Power Off
1 If the HPA is in transmit mode (high voltage enabled), it is recom-
mended to turn-OFF high voltage via the controller front panel or via
control application running on PC. Most TWTA’s can be turned OFF
by removing AC power while the HPA is in transmit mode; a hard
shutdown. This type of hard shutdown would occur in the event of a
power utility outage or circuit breaker trip. When possible, it is rec-
ommended to perform a controlled shutdown by going to standby
then removing AC power.
2. Remove AC power. A customer-installed circuit breaker on AC
prime power lines, or the circuit breaker installed on the HPA, can
be used to remove AC power.
Operating Modes
There are five amplifier operating modes:
•
Filament Time Delay
•
Standby
•
Heater Standby
•
Transmit
•
Fault
Filament Time Delay
When AC power is applied, the amplifier will enter Filament
Time Delay mode (FTD). FTD is a timed mode that lasts from
three to five minutes depending on the amplifier model. During
this mode, the TWT filament is heating up to the proper
operating temperature. If the HPA has a local LED, the LED will
blink in the amber state during this time period. On newer
generation units, the blink rate of the status LED will increase as
the FTD nears completion. If the HPA is configured to
automatically enter transmit mode when FTD is complete, Auto
High Voltage ON mode, the LED blinking green.
