Sample Analysis

WARNING

Improper sample preparation and spread techniques can create an unsafe testing environment due to fire
or volatiles in the cavity.

• Pipette – For highly absorbent, high moisture samples (>85% moisture), pipette the sample onto the center of

the top sample pad. The sample will fully absorb into the pad within a few seconds, after which the analysis can
begin.

• Pipette, cover, and press – For slightly less absorbent products that still have a high moisture content, pipette

the product onto the center of the top sample pad. Cover the sample with the second sample pad to fully cover
the product. Gently use the sample press to spread the sample thinly and evenly between the two pads

• Mound, cover, and press – For solid and semi-solid products, use a spatula to place the correct sample weight

on the center of the top glass fiber sample pad while it is still on the balance pan. Remove the pad and sample
from the balance pan. Cover the sample with the second sample pad and use the sample press to spread the
product thinly and evenly. Ensure that no product has pressed from between the two sample pads.

• Powders – Use a template or spread the sample thin and evenly over 75% of the pad.
• For sample specific spread techniques, refer to the method notes.
