Anexpanderactsintheoppositewaytoa
compressor:Whenasignalexceedsthe
expanderthresholditispassedthrough
unchanged,andwhenitfallsbelow
thethresholditisreduced,effectively
increasingthedynamicrangeofthesignal
andreducingunwantedaudiocontent.
Agateiseffectivelyanextremeversion
ofanexpander,withaveryhighratio,
resultinginthegainoftheinputsignal
beingsignificantlyreducedalmost
immediatelyasitfallsbelowthethreshold.
Gatesareoftenusedtominimise
unwantedaudiocontent.
Calrec’sexpander/gateprocessing
has6dBofbuilt-inhysteresistoavoid
unwanted‘chatter’(constanton/off
switching)resultingfromaninputsignal
residingonoraroundthethreshold.
TheGainreductionbargraphsareagain
shownontheleftoftheprocesswindow.

AfterpressingExpander/Gatefromthe
AccessedPathProcessingsectionofthe
Menu,thecontrolscanbeadjustedina
numberofways:-

Draggingtheslidersleftandright
•
Uand-buttonsattheend
ofthesliders.
•
Draggingthethresholdcontrolcircle
onthegraph.
Theresultantnumericalvaluesareshown
inthetoprighthandcornerofeach
controlandalsoreflectedonthegraph.

Expander/Gate In/Out switch:
Thisis
showninthefunctionbanneritswitches
theExpander/Gateinoroutofcircuit.
Mode:
Theexpander/gatemodule
hasadualmodebuttonforswitching
betweenexpanderandgatefunctionality.
Threshold:
Thelevel(dBFS)atwhichthe
signalwillbegintohaveitsgainaffected.
Ratio (expander only):
Controlsthe
amountofgainreductionappliedtothe
inputsignallevel.2.1Hardkneeusesa
fixedratioof2:1,meaning1dBofgain
reductionisappliedforevery1dBthatthe
signalfallsbelowthethreshold.Variable
Softkneeusesavariableratiodependent
ontheinputsignallevelwiththefinal
ratioof3:1beingappliedwhenthesignal
dropsto20dBbelowthethreshold.
Depth:
Controlsthemaximumamount
ofattenuationwhichcanbeappliedto
signalsbelowthethreshold.
Delay (Gate Only):
Theminimumtime
thegatewillbeheldopenbeforeclosing
oncethethresholdisreached.
Attack:
Timetakenfortheexpander/gate
takestoopen.Shortattacktimeshelpto
preservenaturaltransientattackbutcan
resultina‘clicking’soundduetotherapid
transition.Alongattacktimeensures
asmoothertransitionbutsomeofthe
transientinformationwillbelost.
Release:
Timetakenfortheexpander/
gatetoclose.Longerreleasetimes
createasmoothermorenaturaltransition.
