Initialization of the controller
This chapter describes how to initialize the handheld computer. Perform this procedure
either when you are using the handheld for the first time or when you have previously
performed the RESET function (see "Resetting" on page 32).
1. Make sure that the DEC and RA clamps (6 and 9, fig. 2) are tightened according to
the instructions.
2. Make sure the controls and power supply are properly connected to your telescope.
3. Set the power supply switch to "ON". The display field is activated, followed by a
brief copyright message. A short beep will be heard. The controller now needs a
moment to power up the system.
4.
You will then be prompted to enter the date and time. The date is displayed in the
format "Year-Month-Day / e.g.: 2016-31-12" is entered. The time is displayed in the
format "Hour-Minute-Second / e.g..: 20:15:00" is entered. To do this, use the arrow
keys and confirm your entries with the ENTER key (2 and 5, fig. 33).
5. You will now be prompted to enter daylight saving time. Select the "on" setting when
using the telescope in daylight saving time. Select the "off" setting when using the
telescope outside daylight saving time.
6. The next display will ask you about the country and city of your observation site. You
have two different input options.
1. You can select a city near you from the internal database (select "Country & City").
The countries are listed in alphabetical order in the database. Use the up and
down direction keys to scroll through the list of countries and cities. When the
desired city appears on the display, press the ENTER button.
2. If you enter the data manually (select "Custom Site"), you can specify your location
data manually. Enter the name ("Name"), the longitude ("Lon"), the latitude ("Lat")
and the time zone ("Zone") and confirm your entries with the ENTER key.
Example:
Name: Berlin ; Lon: E013° 25` ; Lat: N52° 30` ; Zone: E01
The telescope control now displays the main screen and is ready to align with the starry
sky.
One-star alignment
After you have completed the initialization, you can align the mount with the handheld
computer. The fastest and easiest way to use control positioning is one-star alignment.
The alignment can only take place at night.
1. Bring the telescope into the azimuthal position (Fig. 17) or parallactic home position
(Fig. 29) and close the clamps in both axes. Please refer to the information in "Alignment
of the MCX to the celestial pole" on page 19.
2. Press the ENTER button once to enter the main menu and select "Setup". Press the
ENTER button and select "EQ" or "AZ".
3. Press the MODE button and select the menu item "Alignment". Press the ENTER button.
4. Various alignment methods now appear for selection. Select "One Star" and press the
Enter key.
5. A selection of alignment stars is now displayed. Use the "Up" and "Down" direction
keys to select the desired alignment star and confirm your selection with the ENTER
key. The telescope now moves from the starting position to the vicinity of the selected
alignment star.
6. It may happen that the star does not appear in the field of view of the telescope after
positioning. Then use the direction keys to bring this star into the field of view and
center it. The alignment star is usually clearly visible and the brightest star in the sky
