3.5.3 AIRSKIN® Pad
An AIRSKIN® Pad is an airtight casing made of polyurethane which incorporates safe sensor electronics. LEDs
are incorporated in the safety electronics, and they can display signals concerning the current status of the pad.
You can find details of the individual signals in the information materials for your specific robot model.
3.5.4 AIRSKIN® Connection Box
The purpose of the AIRSKIN® Connection Box is to connect the AIRSKIN® Safetyflange to a robot or machine
controller. The AIRSKIN® Connection Box connections are
24 V DC
(‘+’), Ground (‘G’), ‘IN1’, ‘OUT1’, ‘IN2’, ‘OUT2’ on
one side, and the connection cable to the first AIRSKIN® Pad in the system on the other side.
The AIRSKIN® Connection Box possesses two status LEDs which show the status of the two safety lines. In
normal operation, the two LEDs light up and show that the safety lines are attached. The LEDS are not lit in the
case of actuation, a fault, or lack of supply voltage on the part of an AIRSKIN® Pad.
LEDs must always match up
When correctly operated, the two LEDs must always match up. If this isn’t the case, this
indicates an incorrect configuration or a fault.
The Restart button on the AIRSKIN® Connection Box is used to safely restart the AIRSKIN® system.
For safety reasons, the AIRSKIN® Pad that is incorporated in the AIRSKIN® Safetyflange requires some essential
information about the system in which it finds itself (e.g. the number of pads in the system and its own position
within the system). When the AIRSKIN® System is first brought into service or reconfigured (e.g. by adding or
exchanging a pad), this information must be reset by using the Spark button on the AIRSKIN® Connection Box.
This applies to stand-alone use of the AIRSKIN® Safetyflange as well as in conjunction with an existing AIRSKIN®
System.
3.5.5 Sealing gasket
The AIRSKIN® Safetyflange is supplied with a sealing gasket to protect it against foreign bodies, which thereby
leads to protection class IP50.
Functional impairment due to penetration of foreign bodies
The AIRSKIN® Safetyflange must only be used in environments that correspond to the
stated protection class, otherwise foreign bodies that have penetrated it might block the
mechanical components and thereby disable the Safetyflange’s safety function.
