Media Converter System II

chassis feature a serial port that uses an IBM-

compatible DB-9 serial connector.  To connect a

Media Converter System II

chassis to your terminal/computer, use a straight-through (pin-to-pin) cable.
(If your computer/terminal has a serial port using a connection not compat-
ible with a DB-9 COM port, use the pin connection chart for reference in
making a cable.)  Make sure the
cable length is under 50 ft. (15.24
m).  Plug one end of the cable into
the DB-9 connector on the

Media

Converter System II

chassis and the

other into the appropriate port on
your computer/terminal.

Set your computer/terminal for VT-100 emulation.  The serial port on the

computer/terminal should be set for:

4) Remove the fan slowly from its mount, then reach into the chassis and

disconnect the female connector on the fan harness from the back-
plane.  For the

2-Slot Chassis

,the backplane is on the left and for the

two fans in the

8-Slot chassis

, the connectors are connected to a fan

cable extension.  Pull this cable assembly out, then disconnect the fan
assembly.

5) Take the replacement fan, plug the

female connector into the same
male connector that you removed
the faulty fan from.  In the case of
the

2-Slot Chassis

, the fan located

closest to the application modules
brings air into the chassis, while
the fan on the back of the chassis
exhausts air.  Please reference the
diagram below to ensure that the
fans are positioned correctly.  Both
fans on the

8-Slot Chassis

exhaust air.

Installation of Modular Fan into a 2-Slot Chassis (certain models)

6) After securing the connector, carefully place the wires into the chassis

away from the fan, then replace fan assembly, securing to the chassis
with the screws removed above.

NOTE: Fans typically do not need replacing in 18-Slot chassis.
