8.6.5 Optimizing the Filling and Emptying of the Blood Pumps
8.6.5.1 Blood Pump Phases
8.6.5.2 Basic Procedure
Individual settings: The parameter values must be determined and set individually
for each patient.
Preconditions: Before setting the parameters, the status of the patient must be as-
certained (blood volume, MAP,PAP, CVP). Ensure that the patient has sufficient blood
volume. Patient blood pressure will need to be between 60 and 80 mmHg, but certain-
ly no higher than 80 mmHg. At higher pressures, the blood may not be completely driv-
en out of the blood pump. If necessary, reduce the patient’s blood pressure using
medication.
Goal: Generate a blood flow that corresponds to the patient’s needs.
Choose settings in this order:
1. Rate - 2. Filling/Emptying (++ + - --) - 3. Duration systole.
Monitoring: Monitor and evaluate the filling and emptying of the blood pump over sev-
eral cycles after each parameter change.
1. Adjust the Rate to generate sufficient blood flow.
2. Adjust Filling and Emptying . The goal is to completely fill and empty the blood
pump. A crease-free membrane in the end position indicates complete filling and
emptying. Complete filling and emptying ensures that the volume of the blood
pump is used and, therefore, that the required blood flow is achieved in the pa-
tient. The complete filling and emptying of the blood pump reduces the risk of de-
posits.
Ensure that the membrane moves continuously. At very high pressures, the
