F-5) Impeller and Volute Service:
To clean out volute (5) or replace impeller (7) disconnect
power, remove four cap screws (9) and vertically lift motor
assembly from volute (5). Clean out volute if necessary. Clean
and examine impeller (7), for pitting or wear and replace if
required, inspect gasket (8) and replace if cut or damaged. If
the impeller (7) requires replacing, remove impeller nut (6). The
impeller is keyed onto the shaft with key (10) and to remove,
pull impeller straight off the shaft using a wheel puller, if
required. Before reinstalling, check the motor shaft and
impeller bore for damage.
Reassembly:
To install impeller (7), apply a thin film of oil to motor shaft and
slide impeller straight onto shaft, keeping keyways lined up.
Drive key (10) into keyway. Apply thread locking compound to
motor shaft threads, thread impeller nut (6) onto shaft and
torque to 35 ft. lb. Rotate impeller to check for binding. Position
gasket (8) on volute flange and install impeller and motor
housing onto volute (5). Apply thread locking compound to
threads of each cap screws (9) and torque to 24 ft. lb. Check
for free rotation of motor and impeller.
F-6.1) Single Seal - EL Models:
To examine or replace the shaft seal (13), remove impeller and
volute per section F-5. Drain oil per section F-1.
CAUTION ! - Handle seal parts with extreme care.
DO NOT scratch or mar lapped surfaces.
If repair is required remove retaining ring, spring and rotating
member from shaft. Examine all seal parts and especially
contact faces. Inspect seal for signs of wear such as uneven
wear pattern on stationary member, chips and scatches on
either seal face.
DO NOT
interchange seal components,
replace the entire shaft seal (13). If replacing seal, remove
stationary from drive end bell (46) by prying out with flat screw
driver.
Reassembly:
Clean and oil seal cavity in drive end bell (46). Lightly oil (
DO
NOT
use grease) outer surface of stationary member. Press
stationary member firmly into drive end bell (46), using a seal
pusher (see Figure 7 & 8), nothing but the seal pusher is to
come in contact with seal face. Make sure the stationary
member is in straight.
Lightly oil shaft and inner surface of bellows on rotating
member. With lapped surface of rotating member facing inward
toward stationary member, slide rotating member onto shaft,
using the seal pusher, until lapped faces of stationary and
rotating member are together.
It is extremely important to keep seal faces clean during
assembly. Dirt particles lodged between these faces will cause
the seal to leak. Place spring over shaft and place on rotating
member, making sure it is seated on retainer and not cocked
or resting on bellows tail. Slide retaining ring over shaft and let
rest on spring. Assemble impeller and volute as outlined in
section F-5. Replace oil per section F-4.
F-6.2) Double Seal - EDS Models:
To examine or replace the shaft seal (13), remove impeller and
volute per section F-5. Drain oil per section F-1.
CAUTION ! - Handle seal parts with extreme care.
DO NOT scratch or mar lapped surfaces.
If repair is required remove outboard seal retaining ring (13A),
spring (13B) and rotating member (13C) from shaft. Remove
Cap Screws (67) and lockwashers (68) from outer seal housing
(62). To remove Outer seal housing (62), insert two 5/16-18
cap screws into outer threaded holes and draw down. Now
remove retaining ring (66) and remove inboard seal retaining
ring (13A), spring (13B) and rotating member (13C) from shaft.
Loosen and remove brass male connector (63) from inner seal
housing (61) and insert two 5/16-18 cap screws into threaded
holes and draw down. Examine all seal parts and especially
contact faces. Inspect seal for signs of wear such as uneven
wear pattern on stationary member, chips and scatches on
either seal face.
DO NOT
interchange seal components,
replace the entire inner or outer shaft seal (13). If replacing
seal, remove stationary from outer seal housing (62) and/or
inner seal housing (61) by prying out with flat screw driver.
Reassembly:
Begin assembly of seals by dipping the two smallest O-rings
(70) in the cooling oil (Table 1). Remove O-rings from oil,
allowing excess to drain. Place o-ring (70) in groove on inside
of inboard (61) and outboard (62) seal housings (see Figures
10 & 11).
