Glossary
AppleTalk
A local area network protocol for communication between Apple
Computer products and other computers and peripherals.
ARP
Address Resolution Protocol. A protocol within the TCP/IP suite of
network protocols that allows a host to find the physical address of a
node on the same network. ARP cannot be used across routers.
Auto-IP
A method to automatically set an IP address in the absence of a DHCP
server.
Bonjour
Bonjour enables automatic discovery of computers, devices, and services
on IP networks without the need to enter IP addresses or configure DNS
servers.
config
File
This is a file that resides in the print server’s memory and contains all the
parameters that determine the print server’s functionality. By editing the
config
file (changing the parameter settings), you can configure the print
server to meet the printing needs of your network.
DHCP
Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol. DHCP enables a host (e.g. print
server) to automatically obtain an unused IP address. It also provides
validation data that defines for how long the IP addresses will remain
valid.
To fully benefit from this method, the print servers described in this
manual also support the DDNS, which is available in Windows 2000
networks.
DNS
Domain Name System. Resolves host names into IP addresses.
Dynamic DNS
Dynamic Domain Name System. Allows hosts to dynamically change IP
addresses in DNS, e.g. when the host is given a new IP address by DHCP.
Firmware
Firmware is the print server’s internal software.
Factory Default
A Factory Default is performed by pressing the test button on the print
server in specific sequences. A Factory Default will restore all settings to
their default values.
Flash Memory
The print server firmware is stored in Flash memory
.
