General safety instructions
for bicycles
Warning:
• The bicycle is designed to be ridden on normal roads
and not for terrain or competitive use. Any form of use
other than that described in this instruction manual
can lead to a serious risk for personal injury or material
damage.
• Never brake hard using the coaster brake in slippery
conditions, e.g. on gravel, ice, snow or wet tarmac.
• It may become difficult to control the bicycle in wet or
windy weather conditions. Reduce your speed and
exercise greater caution, or use an alternative form of
transport.
• Always brake using the rear brakes first before
attempting to use the front brakes. This especially
applies if road surfaces are slippery.
• For steep hills several braking methods should be
combined, otherwise using the coaster brake may
cause the rear wheel to overheat.
• As with all mechanical components, the bicycle
is subject to wear and high stress loads. Different
materials and components may react to wear or
stress fatigue in different ways. All components have
a certain lifespan and if the life of a component has
been exceeded, it may suddenly fail causing possible
injury to the user. Any forms of cracks, scratches or
changes of colouring in highly stressed areas indicate
that the life of the component has been reached and it
should be replaced.
• When brakes are applied, the brake pads wear against
the wheel, which means that the wheel rims and brake
surfaces become worn over time. The rate of wear
and tear depends on several factors, e.g. the way in
which the brakes are used, road conditions, how often
the brake pads are replaced, and how often the brake
pads and wheels are cleaned. The sides of the wheel
rim can eventually become so thin that they collapse,
which can result in serious personal injury and material
damage. Check the wheels regularly, and replace
wheels that show signs of wear.
• Brakes and braking components can become very hot.
Do not touch them during, or shortly after, use.
• An open, unplugged end on the handlebar could cause
injury in the event of an accident. Check that the ends
of the handlebars are covered by the handgrips or with
handlebar plugs.
• There may be sharp points on the teeth of the cogs
and sprockets.
• The pedals may have sharp edges and serrations.
• Moving parts can cause cutting and crushing injuries,
even resulting in the breaking of bones.
• Clamps and other parts may cause crushing injuries.
• If you cycle in conditions with poor visibility (such as in
fog, twilight or at night), others many find it difficult to
see you, and the risk of an accident increases. Always
use lights (front and rear) when cycling in poorly lit
conditions where visibility is low.
• You expose yourself to increased risk if you use the bicycle
in a way that is not recommended, e.g. if you:

Perform jumps with the bicycle.

Cycle over tree roots and branches, stones, or
other similar objects.

Cycle on challenging terrain.

Cycle in an unusual manner.
• An excessive load can cause the frame or other parts
to break, thus increasing the risk of injury. Minimise
the risk of injury and damage by using the bicycle in
the correct manner.
Important:
• Tighten all nuts, bolts and screws, but do not overtighten.
Use a torque spanner to ensure the correct level of
torque (where such levels are stated).
• Adjust the bicycle so that it fits you and your body
type.
• Always conduct a safety check before using.
• Always use a properly adjusted and fitted helmet.
• Always keep both hands on the handlebars.
• Wear clothing that makes you visible to your fellow
road users.
