Carefully read p. 51 (MAINTENANCE).
Check the spark plugs every 7500 km
(4687 mi), change them every 15000 km
(9375 mi).
In case of use on racetracks, change the
spark plugs every 5000 km (3125 mi).
To reach the spark plugs:

Remove the air cleaner case, see p. 70
(REMOVING THE AIR CLEANER CA-
SE).
NOTE
The vehicle is provided with two
spark plugs. The following operations refer
to one spark plug only, but are valid for both.
For the removal, proceed as follows:
◆
Remove the spark plug cap (1).
◆
Introduce the appropriate socket spanner
provided in the tool kit on the spark plug.
◆
Push the socket spanner on the spark
plug.
NOTE
When the socket spanner is pu-
shed, the rubber part inside it will surround
the top of the spark plug and, after it has
been unscrewed, will make it possible to
withdraw the socket spanner and the spark
plug together.
◆
Push the socket spanner on the spark
plug.Insert the 13 mm fork spanner pro-
vided in the tool kit in the hexagonal seat
of the spark plug spanner.
◆
Unscrew the spark plug and extract it
from its seat, taking care to prevent dust
or other substances from getting inside
the cylinder.
◆
Extract the spark plug from the socket
spanner.
◆
Make sure that there are neither carbon
deposits, nor corrosion marks on the elec-
trode and on the central porcelain part.
If the spark plug has crackings on the insu-
lating material, corroded electrodes or
excessive deposits, it must be changed.
◆
Make sure that the washer is in good
conditions.
◆
Introduce and push the spark plug in the
socket spanner.
◆
Position the spark plug by means of the
socket spanner.
◆
Manually screw the spark plug by means
of the socket spanner
◆
Tighten the spark plug by means of the
spanner you will find in the tool kit, giving
it half a turn to compress the washer.
Spark plug driving torque:
10-12 Nm (1,0-1,2 kgm).

CAUTION
The spark plug must be well tightened,
otherwise the engine may overheat and
be seriously damaged.
