Using the Dataport
Overview
This section describes how VC Link supports data transmissions as well as Video
and Audio transmissions.
Connecting Equipment to the Dataport
In addition to the ability to transmit and receive audio and video information over
networks, your system supports data transmission. To transmit data across the
network, the codec uses some of its video bandwidth capacity. In normal operating
modes, any reduction in video quality is imperceptible.
The provided dataport is multi-purpose providing the following modes of opera-
tion: Modem, Data, and T.120.
The Modem mode permits you to control the codec when the unit is not connected
to another videoconferencing unit (for codec firmware upgrades, etc.). Addition-
ally, this mode provides a transparent data transmission channel to a remote site
upon connection.
To obtain a data channel that is transparent at all times during a videoconference
but does not revert to control outside of a conference, select the Data mode.
T.120 mode provides protocol support of T.120 data sharing and data conferencing
applications.
Connecting Equipment to the Dataport
Dataport 1 utilizes a 9-pin female, D-sub connector located on the back panel of the
codec. A straight through cable is used between the codec’s dataport and the con-
necting equipment. Pins 2, 3, 5, 7 and 8 are the only pins used. Figure 57 shows the
recommended wiring.
