5 ELECTRICAL SUPPL Y
5 IMPORTANT NO TES
The SolarSmart requires a 230/240 V ~ 50 Hz supply, fused at 3 A if a 13 A 3-pin plug is used or a 5 A fuse if an y other type of
plug is used.
To connect a plug:-
The colour of the wires in the mains lead may not correspond with the coloured mar kings identifying the terminals in y our plug.
In this case proceed as follo ws:-
The wire coloured green and y ellow m ust be connected to the terminal in the plug that is mar ked with the letter
E
, or by the
earth symbol , or coloured green or g reen and yello w.
The blue wire m ust be connected to the terminal which is mar ked with either the letter
N
or coloured blac k.
The brown wire m ust be connected to the terminal which is mar ked with the letter L or coloured red.
THE APPLIANCE MUST BE EARTHED .
Proviso: WRAS Appro val - Solar heating system components . Compliance with the rele vant requirements of the Water Supply (W ater
Fittings) Regulations 1999 has been assessed for this product only as a component of a heating system. If it is to be installed as
part of a system using solar energy or g round - or air - source heat pumps for pre-heating w ater which is to be used as domestic hot
water , the W ater Fittings Regulations place a legal duty on the installer and user to ensure that the installation and operation of the
complete system prevents contamination of domestic hot w ater by Legionella bacter ia, which can gro w in water stored at temper atures
between 20° and 45°C . Where disinf ection by heating is relied on to meet this ob ligation, infor mation on minimum conditions f or thermal
disinfection of Legionella bacter ia can be found on the WRAS website - www .wras .co.uk
1. Location - Always ensure the f ollowing clear ances are availab le around the units for ser vicing:-
Cylinder -
T op: 100 mm, Bottom: 300 mm, Sides: 10 mm, Front: 450 mm.
Drain Back Unit - T op: 100 mm, Bottom: 100 mm, Sides : 10 mm, Front: 450 mm.
2. Mains F ailure - In the event of an electr ical supply failure the system will not oper ate. When the supply is restored, the
system will return to nor mal operation. If the mains water supply f ails, there will be no hot w ater from the taps.
3. Pressure Relief Valves - If the hot water system o verheats and steam or w ater is discharged from the pipe connected to the
tundish, turn the Solar system off and contact y our Installer. Y our Installer should have told y ou where these pipes terminate .
4. Hot Water - T o pre vent v ery high temper atures at the hot water taps , the Installer should have fitted a ther mostatically
controlled mixing valv e after the combination boiler.
5. Hot Piping - The temperatures of pipe wor k from the collector panel, drain bac k unit and solar cylinder can be ver y high.
Therefore all Solar system pipe wor k should have been insulated to not only reduce heat loss , but more impor tantly to prevent
injury from b urns . Ensure y our Installer has done this!
6. Fr ost -
Always ensure the room/area where the v arious par ts of the solar system have been installed are protected from frost.
7. Holida ys - The SolarSmar t system uses a ver y small amount of energy for its oper ation and during normal vacations (1-2 w eeks)
we recommend that the system is left s witched ON.
If hot water is not used f or an extended per iod of time or the property is v acant then we recommend the system is s witched
off and the cylinder is drained at the dr ain point provided. Further details of this procedure can be f ound in the Installation and
Servicing Instr uctions alternativ ely contact your installer or engineer .
8. Ser vicing - T o maintain efficient and saf e operation of the SolarSmar t system, it is recommended regular inspection and
checks are carr ied out.
9. Electric Immersion Heater - The facility to fit an electr ic immersion heater is availab le which can be used to provide additional
heat to the cylinder contents if required.

The serial n umber of the cylinder is located on lefthand side of the case and on the bottom.
