Fixture Safety Considerations

Some safety elemen ts t o con sid er befor e bu ild in g a fixtur e ar e list ed

p r actices, an d t he n atur e of t he tests bein g p er for med.
High Voltage Hazards
Volt age values equal to or exceed in g t he followin g levels (wit h r esp ect to
ch assis grou n d) ar e con sid er ed to be shock hazar ds:
60 VDC
42 Vp k
30 Vr ms
If a hazard ou s volt age p r esen t on you r fixtu r e or DUT is accessible t o
op er ator s, you sh ou ld p rovid e a safety shr ou d. You shou ld also war n
op er ator s of th e d an ger with a high- volt age war n in g label.
For t he Agilen t L4532A/ 34A, th er e ar e t hr ee main con sid er ation s
r egar din g high volt age safety:
1 Make su r e t hat all BNC cables bein g used ar e r ated for t he exp ected
volt ages.
2 Make su r e t hat t he DUT d oes n ot h ave high volt age (gr eat er t han 42
Vp k) cir cu its exposed to t he oper at or.
3 Make su r e t hat floatin g shields on two or mor e ch an n els d o n ot
float at a shield - to- shield pot en tial exceed in g 42 Vp k. Oth er wise, a
shr ou d should be u sed .
WA R N I N G
If the shields of two or more channels are expected to float with more than a 42
Vpk potential difference between shields, operators must be protected against
the resulting shock hazard. A shroud or cover must be provided to prevent
contact with the shields during such operations. Failure to do so may result in
electric shock.
