Problem Possible Cause Solution
Hard water (unit not using salt; liquid level in
brine tank not too high)
Electrical service to unit interrupted Assure permanent electrical service is working
properly (check fuse, plug, pull chain, or switch)
Timer not working Replace timer assembly
Timer improperly set Check programming function
Safety brine valve not opening Replace safety brine valve
Salt “bridged” in brine tank Breakup salt
Meter not functioning Clean or replace as necessary
Hard water (unit using salt; liquid level in brine
tank not too high)
Bypass open Close bypass (replace if necessary)
Timer improperly set Increase frequency of regeneration
No salt in brine tank Add salt; maintain above water level
Excessive water usage Increase frequency of regeneration and/or salt
setting (See HOW TO SET TIME OF DAY)
Unit installed backwards Reinstall unit
Unit undersized Replace with larger unit
Liquid level in brine tank too high Brine valve not closing Replace brine valve
Salt setting too high Reset timer
Injector or Injector screen plugged Clean injector and screen
Drain line frozen, plugged or restricted Free drain
Salt “mushed” or sand from salt plugging bottom
of brine tank
Clean out brine tank (see instructions on page 14)
Incorrect brine line flow control (BLFC) Replace with correct flow control valve (see

System regenerates at wrong time of day Timer improperly set Reset timer

remove foreign material and check control in
various regeneration positions
Internal control leak Replace seals and/or piston assembly

White spots on glassware and dark surfaces Sodium residual resulting from water having very

Iron build-up in water softener Clean control and add Iron Reduction Media to
