Placing a filter on the receive path prohibits a packet from accessing certain
network segments unless it meets the forwarding criteria.
A packet is discarded if it does not meet the forwarding criteria defined in
the filter. See Figure 7-1Figure 7-1.

The following examples show you how to define and apply packet filters
to ports and paths on your network. Example 1 isolates protocols in a
network. Example 2 shows a more complex version of the filter in the first
example, showing how expressions are evaluated in a packet filter.
