Tips for caregivers
School and everyday life
Nursery/School/Sport
As a caregiver, you can discuss with the child, whether it wants to show and explain
its diabetes with its blood glucose monitoring system, insulin pump or pen. Maybe the
child would also like to make a presentation about its diabetes in front of the class.
To make sure that the child always has everything with it at school, it is important that
you check with it whether it has an emergency box (spare material and suitable food
in case of hypoglycaemia) and the parents’ phone number with it or has positioned it
somewhere in the classroom.
When the child notices that it has a low blood glucose level, it should immediately be
able to consume some glucose and measure its blood glucose level again afterwards.
Low blood glucose levels make concentration and thinking difficult.
Before sports lessons, the child must measure its blood glucose level. Depending on
the age of the child, you can help it decide what it should do because of its measured
blood glucose level. It should have some fast and slow carbohydrates available in its
sports bag.
In case of a low level, the child should eat or drink first (juice, fruit, bread, muesli bar or
yoghurt) and then measure its blood glucose level again after a certain period of time.
If the child does not feel well during the lesson and thinks it might be suffering
from hypoglycaemia, it should stop exercising immediately and should think about the
measurements in case of hypoglycaemia and act accordingly.
