Filling
When filling the mercury storage beakers work very carefully!
Mercury is extremely poisonous and easily volatile. For safety
reasons perform the filling in a big plastic tub.
Collect spilled mercury completely with tin foil, a brush or a mercury
collecting pipette.
If other methods do not work for collecting small amounts of mercury
which have possibly penetrated into gaps: Cover them with a layer of
mercury binding agent several millimeters high. This will prevent
volatilization.
Store contaminated mercury remnants in a suitable and closed bottle
and take them to a disposal center.
Ÿ
Incline the storage beakers and with the
funnel carefully pour a 2 ml mercury
portion in each of the mercury storage
beakers .
The filling of the glass capillary should be
free of bubbles.
Ÿ
Put on closing caps, but do not yet tighten
them.
Ÿ
Check for air bubbles:
With a Peleus ball which has been put on
the hose connector (connection to glass
capillary) take in mercury approx. to the
end of the scale.
Ÿ
Remove air bubbles by pressing the
mercury back into the storage beaker (with
Peleus ball).
Ÿ
Pour 1 ml deionized water onto the
mercury in the storage beaker.
From time to time replenish the water.
Ÿ
With the screw cap close the storage
beaker airtight.
