Westward Operating Instructions and Parts Manual

Long Chassis Hydraulic Service Jack

Study, understand, and follow all

instructions before operating this device. Do not

exceed rated capacity. Use only on hard, level

surface. Lifting device only. Immediately after

lifting, support vehicle with appropriate means. Do

not move or dolly the vehicle while on the jack.

Ensure that the lift point is properly centered on

the jack saddle. Lift only on areas of the vehicle as

specified by the vehicle manufacturer. No

alteration of this product is allowed. Failure to

heed these warnings may result in severe personal

injury and/or property damage.

Assembly

(ref. Figure 1)

1. Insert the handle piece into the socket; align the handle

with jack chassis, then tighten the hex nut securely.

2. Operate the release mechanism by turning the

release knob located on top of the handle both

clockwise and counterclockwise. Release valve

shaft should fit properly.

3. Squirt a small amount of hydraulic jack oil on

pistons and lightly lubricate all moving parts of jack.

Preparation

1. Before using this product, read the operator's

manual completely and familiarize yourself

thoroughly with the product, its components and

recognize the hazards associated with its use.

2. Verify that the product and application are compatible.

If in doubt, contact Westward Customer Service.

3. To familiarize yourself with basic operation, turn the

release valve knob:

a. Clockwise until firm resistance is felt to further

turning. This is the ‘CLOSED’ release valve

position used to raise the saddle.

b. Counter-clockwise, but no more than 1/2 turn

from the closed position. This is the ‘OPEN’

release valve position used to lower the saddle.

4. With saddle fully lowered and release valve fully

closed, pump the operating handle.  If lift arm

responds immediately, jack is ready for use.  If

jack does not respond, follow Bleeding/Venting

Trapped Air instruction below.

5. Ensure that jack rolls freely. Raise and lower the

unloaded saddle throughout the lifting range before

putting into service to ensure the pump operates

smoothly. Replace worn or damaged parts and

assemblies with Westward authorized replacement

parts only.

Bleeding/Venting Trapped Air

With the release valve in the OPEN position (step 3b.

above) and with saddle fully lowered, locate and

remove the oil filler plug/screw. Pump 6 to 8 full

strokes. This will help release any pressurized air

which may be trapped within the reservoir. Proper oil

level will vary from just covering the ram cylinder to

3/16” above it as seen from the oil filler hole. Reinstall

the oil filler plug/screw.

Operation

LIFTING

1. Prevent inadvertent vehicle movement by fully

engaging emergency brake, putting transmission in

park. Use wheel chocks in pairs on all unlifted wheels.

2. Close release valve by turning the release knob on

top of handle clockwise until it is firmly closed.

3. Position jack under load and align to the lift point

suggested by vehicle manufacturer.

4. Operate jack by pumping the handle, foot pedal

until saddle contacts load point. Ensure load is

centered on saddle. Then operate jack until load

reaches desired height.

NOTICE:

Do not use foot pedal to raise load.

Clear all tools and personnel

when lowering the load.

LOWERING

Slowly open the release valve by turning the handle

knob counterclockwise.

Avoid shock loads created by

quickly opening and closing the release valve as

the load is being lowered.  Shock loads can cause

system failure and resulting in personal injury

and/or property damage.

MAINTENANCE

NOTICE:

When adding or replacing oil, always use a

good grade hydraulic jack oil.  Do not use hydraulic

brake fluid, alcohol, glycerine, detergent motor oil or

dirty oil.  Improper fluid can cause serious internal

damage to the jack rendering it inoperative.

ADDING OIL

1. Position the jack on level ground and fully lower the

saddle.  Remove oil filler vent screw.

2. Fill oil to within 3/8” of filler hole.

DO NOT OVERFILL.  If overfilled, the jack will not

lower to published minimum height.  If under filled,

the jack will not reach published maximum height.

Adjust fluid level as needed.  Reinstall oil filler vent

screw before using jack.

REPLACING OIL

1. Remove oil filler vent screw.

2. Turn jack over and drain old oil out through oil

filler hole.

3. Refill with new oil through the oil filler  hole.

NOTICE:

Do not allow dirt or other foreign material

to enter the hydraulic system when filling.

4. Perform Bleeding/Venting Trapped Air procedure.

LUBRICATION

1. Add lubricating oil to all moving parts as needed.

2. Apply grease to grease fittings periodically.

RUST PREVENTION

1. Check ram and piston periodically for signs of

corrosion. Clean as needed with an oily cloth.

2. When not in use, store jack with saddle and piston

fully retracted.
