Checking the Brushes
Prerequisites
Generator shut down
Multimeter
Procedure
Follow the procedure below to check the brushes.
1. Remove the end cap
(a)
from the generator.

2. Remove the screw that secures the brush holder
(b)
and remove the brush
holder.
3. Measure the length of the brush protruding from the brush holder. The minimum
allowable length is 6.5 mm (0.25 in.).
4. Measure the continuity of each brush.
Does each brush measure at least 6.5 mm and have continuity?
5. Re-install the brush holder—
do not overtighten the screw
.
6. Re-install the end cap.
The procedure to check the brushes is now complete.
If the problem has not been resolved, continue with checking the excitation wind-
ing.
