Fault-tracing
1. Engine does not start
Starter motor does not turn engine over
CAUSE
●
The reverse gear is not disengaged (applies to
control with neutral position switch)
●
Discharged batteries
●
Main switches off
●
One of the semi-automatic fuses in the terminal box
has tripped
●
Poor contact/break, electrical cables
●
Key switch malfunction
●
Start relay malfunction
●
Starter motor/solenoid (control solenoid) malfunction
●
Water in the engine
REMEDY
Put the reverse gear control lever into neutral
Charge/replace the batteries (or connect up auxiliary
batteries as shown on page 20)
Switch on the main switches
Reset the fuse by pressing in the button
Rectify any open-circuits/loose connections. Check for
oxidation on the contacts. If required, clean them and
spray with damp-inhibitor spray. See wiring diagrams,
pp. 63–69.
Replace key switch
Replace starter relay
Contact authorized service personnel
Contact authorized service personnel. Do not try to start
the engine if there is a possibility that there is water in
the engine.
The starter motor turns the engine over
but it does not start
CAUSE
●
Air in fuel system
●
Fuel starvation or no fuel
– fuel cocks closed
– fuel tank empty/wrong tank on line
– fuel filters clogged (due to contaminants/paraffin
precipitation in the fuel as a result of low outside
temperature)
●
Stop solenoid incorrectly connected/seizing
●
Solenoid valve (fuel shut-off valve) incorrectly
connected
REMEDY
Vent the fuel system as shown on page 51
Open the fuel cocks
Fill with fuel/connect the correct fuel tank
Fit new fuel filters (pre-filter and/or fine filters)
Vent the system as shown on page 51
Check stop solenoid has not been switched on
unintentionally
Check solenoid valve has not been switched on
unintentionally
Starter motor turns over slowly
CAUSE
●
Discharged batteries
●
Poor contact, electrical leads
REMEDY
Charge/replace the batteries (or connect up auxiliary
batteries as shown on page 20)
Rectify any loose connections. Check for oxidation on
the contacts. If required, clean them and spray with
damp-inhibitor spray.
