  b) Connection and operation

•   The charger may be operated only in dry, closed rooms. The charger may not get

damp and wet, as there is a risk of a fatal electric shock!

•   Keep the charger away from easily

fl

 ammable materials (e.g. drapes, paper),

liquids (e.g. gasoline) or gases.

•   Do not place any containers

fi

lled with liquid, e.g. vases or plants, on or next to

the charger.

If these liquids get into the interior of the device, the charger will be destroyed,

and there is also the greatest danger of a

fi

 re or an explosion.

If liquids get onto the charger, switch the mains socket into which the charger is

plugged off at all poles. To do this,

fi

rst turn off the corresponding circuit breakers

or unscrew the fuse. Then, switch off the associated ground fault circuit interrupter
(breaker).

Only then should you unplug the charger from the mains socket. Do not use the

product any longer; rather, take it to a specialised workshop or dispose of it in an
environmentally friendly manner.

•   With this charger, you can charge up to two rechargeable NiCd or NiMH 9 V block

batteries at the same time.

Never insert other rechargeable batteries (e.g. lithium or nickel-zinc batteries) or

non-rechargeable batteries in the charger. There is a great risk of

fi

 re or explo-

sion!

•   Ensure that there is suf

fi

cient ventilation during operation; never cover up the

charger and the connected batteries.

Leave

suf

fi

cient distance (at least 5 cm) between the charger and other objects.

Overheating poses a risk of

fi

 re!

•   Do not operate the charger unattended. Although there are a wide range of

comprehensive safety mechanisms on the device, it is impossible to exclude the
possibility of malfunctions or problems occurring while charging a battery.

•   When you work with the charger or rechargeable batteries, never wear metallic

or strongly conductive materials, such as jewellery (chains, armbands, rings or
similar objects). A short circuit at the battery or charger poses a danger of

fi

 re and

explosion.

•   Placing metallic leads and contacts between rechargeable battery and charging

slot is not permitted! The battery that is to be charged must be inserted directly in
the charging slot of the charger.

•   When the desired charging or discharging process has ended, remove the

rechargeable battery/ batteries from the charger.

•   Use the device only in a moderate climate; do not use it in a tropical climate.

For more information on acceptable environmental conditions, see the chapter
“Technical Data”.

•   Never use the product immediately after it has been brought from a cold room

into a warm one. The resulting condensation may lead to malfunctions or damage
under certain circumstances! There is danger of a life-threatening electric shock!

Let the charger reach room temperature before using it. This may take several

hours!

•   If you are not going to use the charger for a long time (e.g. in storage), remove

the rechargeable battery/ batteries and disconnect the charger from the power
supply; unplug it from the mains outlet. Then store the charger in a clean, dry
place.

c) General information on handling rechargeable batteries

•   Rechargeable batteries are not toys. Always keep batteries out of the reach of

children.

•   Do not leave the batteries lying around in the open; there is a risk of them being

swallowed by children or domestic animals. In such a case, call a doctor imme-
diately!

•   Rechargeable batteries may not be short-circuited, dismantled or thrown into

fi

 re;

never damage the outer casing of a battery. There is a risk of

fi

 re and explosion!

•   If your skin comes into contact with leaking or damaged batteries, you may suffer

burns. For this reason you should use suitable protective gloves in this case.

•   Do not recharge normal, non-rechargeable batteries. There is a risk of

fi

 re and

explosion!

Non-rechargeable batteries are meant to be used once only and must be dis-

posed of when empty.

•  Batteries must not get damp or wet.

•  Never charge/discharge rechargeable batteries unsupervised.
