An MS-AIS is an AIS generated by Section terminating equipment (STE) to alert
downstream Line terminating equipment (LTE) that a defect has been detected on the
incoming SDH Section signal. An STE generates an MS-AIS downstream within 125
milliseconds of detecting an LOS or LOF alarm on the incoming SDH signal.
An AU-AIS is an AIS generated by an LTE to alert downstream STS Path terminating
equipment (PTE) that a defect, such as an LOP, has been detected on the incoming
SDH Multiplex Section signal. An LTE declares an AU-AIS downstream within 125
milliseconds of detecting an LOP alarm on the incoming SDH signal.
If the MPA receives an MS-AIS or AU-AIS alarm, it is reported by the MPA's LEDs and
logged to the Results screen.
The MPA can be used to simulate AIS alarms to verify if downstream NEs react
accordingly to an incoming AIS alarm.

What Causes an RDI Alarm?
A
Remote Defect Indicator (RDI)
is an alarm sent to upstream network elements (NE).
Its purpose is to alert upstream NEs of a downstream failure. The RDI is generated by
the same NE that declares the initial AIS alarm to downstream NEs.
The MPA supports detection and transmission of Multiplex Section RDI alarms
(MS-
RDI)
and Higher-Order Path RDI
(HP-RDI)
alarms.
