3.15.2 - START-UP
IMPORTANT INFORMATION FOR PROPER OPERATION
-
It is strictly FORBIDDEN to open the door of the boiler
during use of the pellet burner.
- Before loading wood in the boiler, you must first turn off the
pellet burner if this is running.
In which case, select
WOOD
mode and wait for the burner to
completely shut down. Only then should you open the door of
the boiler.
- The use of wood with a high moisture content (higher than
about 20%) and/or loads not proportional to the system’s
requirements (long OFF periods with the wood storage
section full) can cause considerable condensation to form in
the storage section.
- Check the steel walls of the upper wood storage once a
week. They should be covered by a slight layer of dry tar,
opaque coloured, with bubbles tending to break and fall off.
If on the other hand, the tar has a glossy, runny appearance
and liquid appears if it is removed with a poker: accordingly, it
is necessary to use wood that is less damp and/or reduce the
amount of loaded wood. The condensate inside the firewood
storage compartment causes the steel sheets to corrode.
WOOD IGNITION
Before igniting the boiler, make sure that:
- The grate is fitted correctly in place at the centre of the base;
- Any cut-off devices are open and that the pumps are not
obstructed;
- The bottom door is properly closed;
- The grate of the pellet burner is fitted properly in place and
that the retainer hook is secured correctly.
To start ignition, place two medium-sized pieces of broken
wood at the sides of the steel grate at the centre of the base of
the storage section; next, place some thin, dry pieces of wood
crosswise at the centre of the grate. Put some easy-to-burn
material on this wood. Do not put on any large pieces. Use
some strips of cardboard or firelighters to light the wood and
wait, with the door open, for the first embers to form.
STARTING THE IGNITION CYCLE
To start the wood ignition cycle, you first need to set
AUTOMATIC
or
WOOD
mode. Next, press key 11 (section 3.13). A beep
confirms the cycle has started, and the fan begins to turn.
Parameter 10 (standby delay time) determines the cycle in
wood mode.
LOADING
If the wood has ignited correctly, arrange the embers to form a
uniform bed at the base.
You can now add more wood. Logs should be the same length
as the furnace (about 50 cm) and measure about 11x13 cm,
with a moisture content of 12 to 20%.
The wood must be loaded in an orderly manner, parallel to
the side walls of the wood storage section, in order to ensure
optimal combustion and to avoid residue forming that could
clog the grate.
Useful tips:
To ensure good combustion, the wood should move down
uniformly. Make sure that the length and shape of the logs and
the way these are loaded allow them to move down in an even
manner. The pieces should be arranged lengthwise: none of
the logs should be placed vertically or diagonally.
Wait for the wood already in the burner to burn as much as
possible before adding more. You can add more wood when
the bed of embers in the firewood compartment is about 5 cm
deep. Add wood as instructed above.
Always observe these instructions.
- Logs which are too long do not fall down properly and
can cause "bridges".
- Close the top door properly after loading wood, and re-
open it only when the wood has run out.
- Open the door of the wood storage section slowly to
allow the fan to reach maximum speed, and to avoid a
sudden movement of air that can fan the flames and
create smoke.
- During normal operation, it is strictly forbidden to open
the lower door of the wood boiler.
- Avoid overfilling with wood, especially during the low
season, to ensure the boiler does not remain inactive
for long periods with the storage section full of wood.
This is because the wood in the storage section dries
out due to the warmth and the water vapour and acids
which form as a result do not escape through the flue
but accumulate in the storage section. The vapour and
acids tend to form condensation in contact with the
cooler internal wall, corroding the material. For this
reason, you are recommended not to fill the storage
section during the warmer months or during the summer
for the production of domestic hot water. It is advisable
to avoid leaving wood in the storage section for more
than a day before being burnt.
