reduce the risk of injury under these conditions, open the hot w ater faucet
for several m inutes at the kitchen sink before you use any electrical
appliance connected to the hot w ater system . If hydrogen is present, you
probably w ill hear an unusual sound such as air e sc aping through the
pipe as the w ater begins to flow .
H ydrogen gas m ay be present even after w ater has been drained from the
tank. O pen faucet at sink and allow system to vent for several m inutes (5-
10 m inutes).
D o not sm oke o r have any open flam e near the open faucet. D o not
attem pt to light pilot or m ain burner. O n D S I m odels, be sure the sw itch
is “O FF ”.
S hould overheating occur, or the gas supply fail to shut off, shut off the
m anual gas valve to the appliance before shutting off the electrical supply.

Im m ediately call a qualified service technician to insp ec t the appliance
and to replace any part of the control system and any gas control that has
bee n sub m erged und er w ater.
D o not alter the operation of your w ater heater n o r change the
design/construction of your w ater heater. A ccessories are being m arketed
for R V products w hich w e do not re com m end. For your safety, only
factory autho rized pa rts are to be us ed on your w ater heater.
P eriodically inspect the vent fo r obstructions or presence of soot. S oot is
form ed w henever com bustion is incom plete. This is your visual w arning
that the w ater heater is operating in an unsafe m anner. If soot is present,
im m ediately shu t the w ater heater dow n and contact yo u r d e aler or a
qualified service person.
W hen considering add-on room s, porch or patio, attention m ust be given
to the venting of your w ater heater. For your safety, do not term inate the
vent on your w ater heater inside add-o n r o o m s, screen porch or onto
patios. D oing s o w ill result in products of com bustion being vented into
the room s or occupied areas.
N ever operate the heater if you sm ell gas. D o not assum e that the sm ell
of gas in your R V is norm al. A ny tim e y ou d etect th e o dor o f g as, it is to
be considered life threatening and corrected im m ediately. E xtinguish any
open flam es inc luding cigarettes and evacuate all persons from the
vehicle. Shut off gas supply at LP gas bottle. (S ee S afety notice on front
cover of this m anual.)
N O T E : A lw ays open both the cold and hot w ater faucets w hen filling
veh icle w ater tank to allow air po ckets to be forced ou t of the w ater heater.
W hen water flow s from the heater faucets, close both faucets.

adjacent to this heater. The appliance shall not be installed in any location
w here flam m able liquids or vapors are likely to be present.
B e sure the w ater heater pilot and all ignition system s are “O FF” during

THERMOSTAT AND MANUAL RESET

The m odel w ater heaters listed above are equipped w ith a high tem perature lim it
as a cut-off device. Tem perature above 180

F w ill cause m anual reset button to
trip shutting dow n m ain burner.
To activate burner, the w ater tem perature m ust be below 110

to re-activate burner.
ANODE PROTECTION
The tank in this w ater heater is protected by a m agnesium or alum inum anode to
prolong the life of the tank by absorbing the corrosive action of hot w ater. U nder
norm al use, the anode rod w ill deteriorate a nd b ecause of this, w e recom m end it
be replaced yearly. N O TE : W ater w ith hig h le v e ls of iron and/or sulfate w ill
increase the rate of deterioration; therefore, m ore frequent replacem ent m ay be
required. If anode rod is m ostly eaten aw ay , replace it w ith a new one. (S ee
Figure 9)
O perating the w ater heater w ithout proper anode protection w ill decrease tank life
and w ill void your w arranty on the tank. N O TE : Tank is drained by rem oving
anode rod (S ee “D rain and S torage” instructions).
To extend anode life, drain w ater from tank w henever R V is not being used. A void
any extended tim e of non-use w ith w ater in tank.
A lso, refer to section on w interizing.
W A R N IN G ! D o not rep lac e the anode rod w ith any non-S uburban
accessory part, such as an “add-on” electric heating elem ent. Item s such
as these are not approved to be installed in Suburban pro ducts. They
could create an unsafe condition and w ill also void all w arranties.
PRESSURE RELIEF VALVE
The tem perature and pressure relief va lve is designed to open if the tem perature
of the w ater w ithin the heater reaches 210°F, or if the w ater pressure in the heater
reaches 150 pounds. R ecreational vehicle w ater system s are closed system s and
during the w ater heating cycle the pressure build-up in the w ater system w ill reach
150 pounds. W hen this pressure is reached, the pressure relief valve w ill open
and w ater w ill drip from th e valve. This d ripping w ill continue until the pressure is
reduced to below 150 pounds, and the valve closes. This condition is norm al and
does not indicate a defective relief valve.
W A R N IN G ! D o not place a valve b etw een the relief v alve a nd the tank. D o
not plug the relief valve under any circum stances.
WATER WEEPING OR DRIPPING FROM PRESSURE
RELIEF VALVE
Y ou m ay experience w ater w eeping or dripping from your w ater heater’s P ressure
and Tem perature (P & T) R elief V alve w hen your w ater heater is operating. W ater
w eeping or dripping from the P & T V alve does not alw ays m ean the P & T V alve
is defective. As w ater is heated, it expands. The w ater sy stem in a recreational
vehicle is a closed system and does n ot allow for the expansion of heated w ater.
W hen the pressure of the w a ter system exceeds the relieving point of the P & T
V alve, the valve w ill relieve the excess pressure.
O ne w ay to reduce the frequency of this occurrence is to m aintain an air pocket
at the top of the w ater heater tank. This air pocket w ill form in the tank by design.
H ow ever, it w ill be reduced over tim e by the everyday use of yo ur w ater heater.
To replenish this air pocket:
1.
Turn off w ater heater.
2.
Turn off cold water supply line.
3.
O pen a faucet in the R V .
4.
P ull out on the handle of the P ressure R elief (P & T) Valve and allow w ater
to flow from the valve until it stops.
5.
R elease handle on P & T V alve - it should snap closed.
6.
C lose faucet and turn on cold water supply; as the tank fills, the air pocket
w ill develop.

R epeat this procedure as often as needed to reduce the frequency of the w eeping
of the P & T V alve. If the w eeping persists after follow ing this procedure, you m ay
elect to install an expansion or accum ulator tank in the cold w ater line betw een the
tank and check valve to relieve the press ure caused by therm al expansion.

DRAINING AND STORAGE INSTRUCTIONS
If R V is to be stored du ring w inter m on ths , the w ater he ater m us t be d ra ine d to
prevent dam age from freezing.
1.
S hut off gas supply to w ater heater.
2.
Turn off pressure pum p on w ater system .
3.
O pen both hot and cold w ater faucets.
4.
R em ove anode rod from tank.
5.
Follow R V m anufacturer’s instructions for draining entire w ater system .
N O TE : B e certain to refill w ater heater w ith water and rem ove all air from tank and
lines before re-lighting.
ODOR FROM HOT WATER SYSTEM
O dor from the hot w ater system is not a service problem and m any w ater supplies
c o ntain sufficien t am ou nts of su lph ur to prod uc e an odo r. The od or is sim ila r to
rotten eggs and is often referre d to as "sulp h ur w ater". It is not harm ful - only
unpleasant to sm ell. Sulphur w ater can be caused by a chem ical action or by
bacteria. The solution to elim inate is chlorination of the w ater system . Add about
six (6) ounces of chlorinated com m on household liquid bleach to each 10 gallons
in the w ater tank. Then run the chlorinated w ater throughout the system , opening
each faucet one at a tim e until you sm ell the chlorine. Let the R V sit for a few days
and the chlorine should take care of the problem . Then you w ill need to take care
of the chlorine. R em ove the chlorine by flu shing th e system w ith fresh w ater. This
m ay take several a ttem pts. You m ay consider adding a filtering system that
rem oves c h lorine and prevents sulphur w ater. If the sulphur or rotten egg sm ell
continues, flush the system once again as described above and replace anode rod
as necessary.
REMOVING WATER HEATER
1.
S hut off gas supply and disconnect gas supply line from w ater heater.
2.
S hut off w ater supply. D rain water from tank follow ing instructions under
“D raining and S torage”.
3.
D isconnect hot and cold w ater lines from w ater heater.
4.
R em ove screw s or nails securing control housing to fram ed opening.
5.
S lide heater out. To reinstall, follow instructions in m anual under “Installation
Instructions”.
WINTERIZING
If your w ater heater plum bing system is equipped w ith a bypass kit, use it to close
off the w ater heater, drain the w ater heater com pletely and leave the w ater heater
close d off (out of the system ) in the bypass position
particularly
if yo u are
introducing antifreeze into the plum bing system . A ntifreeze can be very corrosive
to the anode rod creating prem ature failure and heavy sedim ent in the tank. If the
plum bing system is not equipped w ith a bypass kit, and you intend to winterize by
adding antifreeze to the system , rem ove the a node rod (storing it for the w inter)
and replace it w ith a 3/4" drain plug.

to repair the gas valve. This m ay result in a fire or explosion.

B efore operating w ater heater, check the location of the vent to m ake sure it
w ill not be blocked by the opening of any door on the trailer. If it can be blocked,
do not operate the w ater heater w ith the door open.
OPERATING INSTRUCTIONS
1.
S TO P ! R ead the safety inform ation provided.
2.
Turn off all electric power to the appliance.
3.
Turn “O FF ” gas supply.
4.
W ait five m inutes for gas to clear the area. If you sm ell gas then STO P ! Follow
instructions in item B of the safety inform ation. If you don’t sm ell ga s, go to next
step.
5.
Turn “O N ” gas supply.
6.
Turn on electrical pow er to the appliance.
7.
Turn sw itch to "O N " position. If the burner does n o t light, the system w ill
autom atically attem pt tw o m ore tries for ignition before lock-out.
N O T E :
E ach ignition cycle w ill have a 15 second purge before spark cycle if
system is a three try system .
8.
If lockout occurs before m ain burner lights, turn sw itch to “O FF ”, w ait five
seconds and turn sw itch to “O N ” position. This w ill restart the ignition cycle. The
first start-u p of the heater m a y require several ignition cycles before all air is
purged from the gas lines.
If the burner w ill not com e on, the follow ing item s should be checked before calling
a service person.
1.
S w itch turned off.
2.
G as supply to heater is em pty or turned off.
3.
R eset button on E C O is tripped.
TO TURN OFF WATER HEATER
1. Turn sw itch to “O FF” position.
2.
Turn off electrical pow er to the appliance.
3.
Turn off gas supply.
4.
If v e h icle is to be stored or heater is going to be turned off w hile subject to
freezing tem perature, drain water heater. (S ee “D raining and Storage
Instructions.”)
