shielded from the water spay of higher
elevation sprinklers which could oper-
ate earlier during a fire. Intermediate
Level Sprinklers are also used in appli-
cations such as beneath open gridded
catwalks.
Lead coatings are utilized to extend
the life of copper alloy sprinklers be-
yond that which would otherwise be
obtained when exposed to corrosive
atmospheres. Although lead coated
sprinklers have passed the standard
corrosion tests of the applicable ap-
proval agencies, the testing is not rep-
resentative of all possible corrosive at-
mospheres.
Consequently,
it
is
recommended that the end user be
consulted with respect to the suitability
of these corrosion resistant coatings
for any given corrosive environment.
The effects of ambient temperature,
concentration
of
chemicals,
and
gas/chemical velocity, should be con-
sidered, as a minimum, along with the
corrosive nature of the chemical to
which the sprinklers will be exposed.
APPROVALS AND STANDARDS
Laboratory listings and approvals for
the 5.6 and 8.0 K-Factor Model A In-
termediate Level Sprinklers are given
in Table A.
WARNING
The 5.6 and 8.0 K-Factor Model A
Intermediate Level Sprinklers de-
scribed herein must be installed and
maintained in compliance with this
document, as well as applicable
standards of the National Fire Protec-
tion Association, in addition to the
standards of any other authorities
having jurisdiction. Failure to do so
may impair the integrity of these de-
vices.
The owner is responsible for main-
taining their fire protection system
and devices in proper operating con-
dition. The installing contractor or
manufacturer should be contacted
relative to any questions.
TECHNICAL DATA
The 5.6 and 8.0 K-Factor Model A In-
termediate Level Sprinklers are rated
for use at a maximum service pressure
of 175 psi (12,1 bar) and they are avail-
able in the temperature ratings and
finishes indicated in Table A.
The nominal flow “Q” in GPM (LPM) is
determined by the following formula:
Q=Kp
1/2
where the nominal discharge coeffi-
cient “K” equals 5.6 (80,7) or 8.0
(115,2) and “p” equals the residual
flowing pressure in psi (bar).
The quick response Model A Interme-
diate Level Sprinklers are obtained by
assembling the Q-67 Pendent Shield
or the Q-66 Upright Shield, as applica-
ble, to the basic pendent or upright
sprinklers. The quick response 5.6 K-
Factor Model A Sprinklers are de-
scribed
in
Technical
Data
Sheet
TD515M and the quick response 8.0
K-Factor Model A Sprinklers are de-
scribed in TD525Q. The quick re-
sponse Model A Sprinklers utilize a 3
mm diameter frangible bulb. Table A
indicates the bulb liquid color as a
function of temperature rating.
The Q-66 and Q-67 Shields are fabri-
cated from a low carbon sheet steel
and are furnished zinc coated with a
clear chromate finish. In the case of
the pendent assembly, the Q-67 Pen-
dent Shield and O-Ring shown in Fig-
ure A are field assembled to the Model
A Pendent Sprinkler. The O-Ring
forms a water seal when it is slightly
compressed between the Shield and
sprinkler fitting. In the case of the up-
right assembly shown in Figure A, the
Q-66 Upright Shield is factory assem-
bled to the Model A Upright Sprinkler
with a Screw that is secured in position
with an adhesive.
NOTES
Inquiries concerning the appropriate-
ness of lead coated sprinklers for a
given corrosive environment should
be submitted to the attention of the
Technical Services Department.
Lead coated sprinklers are not suit-
able for use in open sprinkler applica-
tions.
