3.7 The hydraulic brake system
The hydraulic brake system works equally on the main wheels of the
gyrocopter. The system is operated by the pilot with a lever fixed on the
left wall of the cabin along with the fluid reservoir and the main brake
cylinder. The fluid (DOT 4 or Beringer brake fluid) is lead from the main
cylinder to the brake cylinders in the main wheels via hydraulic hoses
which is lead inside the main gear strut. An optional brake lever may be
installed on the left side of the co-pilot and in such a case it is
mechanically connect to the main brake lever in the front part of the
cabin.
The fluid reservoir is in sight of the pilot and must be inspected by the
pilot in command before flight. It must contain fluid up to 50% of its
volume. Use DOT 4 fluids or Beringer brake fluid to add fuel to the
system when needed. However, los of fluid may mean leaks in the
system. This must be fixed to avoid brake failure. It is recommended to
exchange the hydraulic fluid in the system every
500 h.
