Sound room A room designed to
reduce the transmission of sound from
the exterior to the interior. Used for
hearing tests.
Sound waves Vibratory motion
caused by a vibrating body which
transmits a series of alternating
compressions
and rarefactions
(expansions) of the elastic medium.
SPL sound pressure level
Stimulus excitation.
STS Standard threshold shift is a
change in hearing threshold relative to
the baseline audiogram of an average
of 10 dB or more at 2K, 3K, and 4 KHz
in either ear.
STS/P Standard threshold shift
with presbycusis, which takes aging into
formula.
Surge A sudden change in
average RMS voltage level, with typical
duration between 50 µs and 2 s.

Temporary threshold shift (TTS) The
component of threshold shift which
shows progressive reduction with the
passage of time when the apparent
cause
has been removed. The
temporary hearing loss suffered as the
result of noise exposure, if all or part of
the loss is recovered during an arbitrary
period of time when one is on longer
subjected to the noise.
Test printout See audiogram.
Threshold In audiology, the least
audible sound-pressure level. Often
defined operationally as the level of a
sound at which it can be heard by an
individual 50% of the time. tone (a) A
sound wave capable of exciting an
auditory sensation having pitch. (b) A
sound sensation having pitch.
Transient A brief voltage surge of up
to several thousand volts, with a
duration of less than 50 µs.

USB Universal Serial Bus (USB) is a
serial bus standard to interface devices.
USB was designed to allow peripherals
to be connected using a single
standardized interface socket and to
improve plug-and-play capabilities by
allowing devices to be connected and
disconnected without rebooting the
computer
(hot swapping). Other
convenient features include providing
power to low-consumption devices
without the need for an external power
supply and allowing many devices to be
used without requiring manufacturer
specific, individual device drivers to be
installed.
