Performing the scheduled maintenance operations on your motorcycle will make encountering problems unlikely. However, should a problem occur,
check the troubleshooting table and follow the instructions provided to solve the problem. Please note that operations marked with (A) require techni-
cal knowledge. For this reason and for your safety refer to an authorised TM workshop to carry out these operations. Your motorcycle will be serviced
optimally by specifically trained personnel. Contact a TM dealer if you have any questions. For anything that is not covered in this paragraph, refer to
paragraph 5.3.
5.1 DIAGNOSIS (ALL 250Fi - ALL 450Fi)
Incorrect command (EN/SMR/SMM)
Ignition key not inserted
or not turned (SMR/SMM)
Incorrect command (MXE.S. and SMXE.S.)
Faulty start relay
Discharged battery
Ambient temperature very low
Faulty starter motor
Incorrect command (ALL)
No fuel in the engine
Burnt out system fuse (only EN/SMR/SMM)
Incorrect idle speed adjustment
Flooded engine
Wet spark plug
Incorrect distance between electrodes (only 450Fi all)
Faulty start system
Faulty injection system
Damaged wiring
Damaged spark plug cap
Faulty kill switch (EN/SMR/SMM)
Faulty engine stop button (ALL MX/ALL SMX)
Repeat the engine start procedure
according to the motorcycle model (32-33).
Refuel (37).
Check the petrol pump connections and fuel pipe (63).
Check fuel pressure (75) (A).
Check the 2A system fuse and replace it (66).
Correctly adjust the idle speed (74).
Follow the hot start procedure (33).
Clean and dry the spark plug or replace it if required.
Adjust the distance between electrodes (0.8 mm).
Check the start system (PDA) (86) (A).
Check the injection system (PDA) (86) (A).
Check the wiring, earth connections,
connector integrity, cables and sheaths (A).
Check the spark plug cap and replace it if required.
Check the starter and kill switch (14) (A).
Check the engine stop button (15) (A).
Incorrect idle speed adjustment
Damaged spark plug
Faulty start system
Insufficient valve clearance
Correctly adjust the idle speed (74).
Replace the spark plug.
Check the start system (PDA) (86) (A).
Adjust valve clearance (A).
Faulty start system
Faulty injection system
Faulty ECU (engine control unit)
Check the start system (PDA) (86) (A).
Check the injection system (PDA) (86) (A).
Replace the ECU (engine control unit) (A).
Clogged air filter
Faulty injection system
Exhaust system not sealed, deformed
or silencer fibreglass exhausted
Insufficient valve clearance
Faulty start system
Faulty ECU (engine control unit)
Clogged fuel filter
Clean or replace the air filter (72).
Check the injection system (PDA) (86) (A).
Check the faulty parts on the exhaust system,
replace the fibreglass in the exhaust silencer (71) (A).
Adjust valve clearance (A).
Check the start system (Diagnostic Tool) (86) (A).
Replace the ECU (engine control unit) (A).
Replace the fuel filter (A).
Repeat the procedure correctly to activate the starter motor
according to the motorcycle model (32-33).
Insert the ignition key and turn it clockwise (15).
Repeat the procedure correctly to activate the starter motor
according to the motorcycle model (32-33).
Check the start relay and replace it (66) (A).
Charge the battery and detect the cause of the discharge (65) (A).
Start the engine using the kick starter vigorously (17).
Check the starter motor (A).
