thickness in rolling processes like steel and
paper production. May be combined with
beryllium or lithium to produce a neutron

Used in nuclear medicine for patient at-
tenuation correction during an imaging
technique (i.e. S.P.E.C.T. imaging) for
yielding 3D information of the patient’s
internal organs, etc.

Used as radiotracers to measure and con-
trol the liquid flow in oil pipelines and
to tell researchers whether oil wells are
plugged by sand. Utilized in density and
fill height sensors to ensure the correct fill
level for food, drugs and other products.

Included in medical in-vitro diagnostic
kits, it is commonly used as a radiological
“marker” to estimate organ size.
