
C A U T I O N
DIETHYLETHER IS HIGHLY INFLAMMABLE AND SHOULD ONLY BE USED BY QUALIFIED
LABORATORY TECHNICIANS WHO HAVE BEEN PROPERLY TRAINED IN THE SAFETY ASPECTS
OF ITS USE. PIACE THE SERVICE UNIT IN A SUITABLE PLACE WELL APART FRCM THE
PLACE WHERE DIETHYLETHER IS HANDLED. MAKE SURE THAT VENTILATION IS ADEQUATE
AND THAT THE SOLVENT IS FREE FROM PEROXIDES.

3. Boiling chips (glass balls 0 •* 3 mm).
V. PROCEDURE
1. Turn on the Service unit in order to heat water to the working
temperature (75 C ) .
2. Fix thimble into thimble adaptor and place it in the thimble
stand. Put sorae cotton wool in the bottorn of the thimble. Always
use defatted thimbles and cotton wool. Never handje them with
your bare hands.
3. Place a thimble support on the balance. Use the thimble handler
to transfer thimble (fixed to adaptor) from the stand to the
support. Tare support plus thimble and weigh in the ground and
well mixed sample. Note the weight (W
1
) .
Use about 3 g if fat content < 10 %
use about 2 g if fat content > 10 %.
Put a plug of cotton wool on top of the sample.
4. Dry the thimbles with sample in an oven (95 - 100 C)
for two hours.
