SX012/AXL012 Flange Facing and Grooving Machine
23
1. Observe all Warnings and Cautions, refer to Sections 3 and 5.1
2. Remove the saddle and toolpost assembly (see Fig. 1) from the drive unit by
removing the 3 off M10 x 30 screws.
3. Measure the outside diameter of the flange and position the jaw assemblies
equally within 12mm (0.5") of the flange size. The 12.7 or 6.35 mm spacers
must be fitted between the jaw assemblies and the base of the machine.
4. Fit the fast mounting plates (Fig. 8).
THIS MACHINE SHOULD BE LIFTED USING SUITABLE MECHANICAL
EQUIPMENT.
WHEN SETTING UP THE MACHINE ON A VERTICAL FLANGE THE LIFTING
CHAIN SHOULD BE LEFT ON UNTIL THE MACHINE IS FULLY SECURED.
5. Place the SX012/AXL012 over the flange and locate the fast mounting plates
flat on the flange. If the flange has a raised face it may be necessary to put a
thin spacer between the mounting plate and the flange on each jaw.
6. Working on pairs of opposite jaws which have the fast mount plates attached,
with a rule measure from the datum on the flange (V groove raised face or ‘O’
ring groove) to the inside of the drive unit just above the jaw assembly. Adjust
the machine until the chosen datum becomes central to the machine. The jaw
assemblies should be progressively tightened as you are adjusting, and
setting during this procedure. Care must be taken not to overtighten the jaw
assemblies as the main bearing is a high quality precision type. Over
tightening may cause distortion resulting in irreparable damage to the bearing.
The correct torque setting for each jaw is 20 ft lbs 27 Nm.
7. Remove the shackles and eyebolts only when safe to do so.
WARNINGS: THE AIR CONTROL VALVE MUST ALWAYS BE POSITIONED
WITHIN REACH OF THE OPERATOR IN CASE OF EMERGENCY.
WHEN SETTING UP THE MACHINE WHILE THE DRIVE UNIT IS BEING
POWERED AROUND, THE AIR FLOW MUST BE REDUCED BY THE GATE
VALVE TO RESTRICT THE SPEED OF THE MACHINE.
8. When the machine is secure remove the fast mount plates and connect the air
supply, see Section 5.3.1.
9. If a greater degree of accuracy is required do not fully tighten the four jaws
and do not remove the fast mount plates. Attach a Dial Test Indicator (DTI) to
the drive unit and set the machine concentric to the groove and parallel with
the flange. To set the drive unit parallel, open the air supply slowly and clock
the flange to find the high spots at the point where the jaws are mounted.
Work at the four points only i.e. the jaw assemblies.
10. Using the grub screws located in each of the fast mount plates, adjust
accordingly. Re-clock the flange and continue until the desired accuracy has
been achieved. Now clock the groove, etc., to set the drive unit central.
Tighten one jaw first then loosen the opposite jaw. Keep doing this in pairs
